Did you check to see if it is stemming from hits to one specific site or just apache in general?

You can also tweak your apache and lower the timeouts a little. You would pobabl benefit from eaccelerator if most of your sites are php based.

    31670 root 25 0 22104 9756 13m R 94.1 0.5 0:07.37 httpd

    27278 root 25 0 4728 1576 3904 R 92.6 0.1 2:10.22 dataskq

and after a while processes with user 'apache' appear again....

Are you using cpanel? Do you have backups enabled? As there is a possibility that your server is doing backups and the server load goes high during that.

Also there are many more possibilities like user apache/www being hacked, or being hit by some kind of DDOS and many more.

You may also check the exact path for the file of the process that you see running, whether it is really gzip or apache or some compromised file..

    Regards

Check "Manage Mail Queue" under the Mail options in WHM. How many messages do you have in your queue? Sounds like you may be backed up.

Additionally check the results of "CPU/Memory/MySQL Usage" in WHM under "Server Status". What is the resulting top processes and usage?

I was specifically looking for the ouput of the WHM script that produces (scripts2/showcpuusage) "CPU/Memory/MySQL Usage" as there may be a single account that is causing the problem.

Check "Apache Status" in WHM, what is the result.

    Should have something like this:

    Code:
    Current Time: TIME
    Restart Time: DATE
    Parent Server Generation: X
    Server uptime: UPTIME
    Total accesses: INFO
CPU Usage: INFO X% CPU load
    X requests/sec - X B/second - X kB/request
X requests currently being processed, X idle servers

    31395 root 19 0 2840 556 1276 R 31.9 0.0 0:01.07 gzip

That usually indicates WHM doing a backup. If you are new to running a Server you'll find that with backups enabled and between 2 - 4 am, backups will start and continue to run till finished. This puts a load on the Server and depending upon the Server resources / usage, backups can take between 2 - 8 hrs.

Reading a thread helps before posting guys =/

You might want to enable mod_status in apache and take a look at your status page to see if there is any site that is using up too much of the resources.

Your ram looks good as you're not going into swap, not even close, so you should also try doing a top output and then sorting by CPU usage and pasting that here.

Run top and then hold shift and press "P" to sort the output by CPU usage.

This is where WHM's administration capabilities really can assist you in quickly diagnosing problems. I apologize for overlooking that, as I could swear I read cPanel/WHM not directadmin...

What is very odd is this result:
    Code:
    8093 root 21 0 3468 996 1620 R 15.9 0.0 0:04.89 top
15.9% CPU usage for top? Normally this should run under 1% on a P4 processor as indicated.

And you didn't post the wrong information, you just didn't sort it by CPU usage. The new information you posted starts with the highest CPU usage % and then descends from there.

I assume you have fully rebooted your server and this produces no change?

no....i m not brave anough to reboot this server>"<
i move this server to another datacenter last sunday...
then i found the speed of starting services when rebooting became extremely slow...
APF need to start up for abt 5min be4(coz my deny.rules is huge, full start up needs abt 6min)...but after moving to the new DC, it took 1hr to finish starting all services@@

Regardless of what Control Panel is used, if backups are enabled (and it looks like they are) then Server load will go up and stay up until backups are completed. How long it takes depends on Server hardware, number of accounts, amount of Server usage used on a regular basis. Monthly stats gathering also puts a seperate load on the Server at the end of each month.

There are few 'odd' things going with one already mentioned by Otrell. Top should not take that much in resources and what are the 14 stopped processes?

    Unhappy

I think we would need to check on this further, you know keep monitoring and check on what is taking up the Load.I am not sure if I can guess from what you have given....sorry...

the gzip modu in apache and the zip modu in php can use a lot of processor with heavily used sites. you may want to try disabling these, in cpanel you can do it in the update apache menu.
it is also worth looking at your timeout its default is usually 15, you could try 2,3 or 4 and see what results you get.
but grab us some real info,
ps aux | grep http | wc -l
ps aux | grep mysql | wc -l
    free -m
and the load averages and cpu states info from "top"

grab this info before you make any changes, document any changes you do make and then grab the stats again. Documentation is the key!!

    good luck.

When the load goes high run this command in SSH:

    Code:
    netstat -n | grep :80 |wc -l
Keep a record of the output number and compare it to the number you get when the load is low. The number represents the amount of users currently connected to httpd.

If you're using WHM try this when the load starts to climb up:

WHM Root >> Server Status >> Apache Status

Once you get there (may take a while if the load is high), scroll down and try to find out which site appears in the table more often than others. That site would be the one that is causing your server to slow down.

This could also be a DoS attack to find this try this in SSH:

    Code:
    netstat -nt | grep :80
If you see any IPs with more than say 2,000 in the "Send-Q" you may want to block them. (please note that you might be blocking a legit IP but, more often than not it's an abusive user)

To block the IP in iptables use this in SSH:

    Code:
    /sbin/iptables -A INPUT -s 1.2.3.4 -j REJECT
(remember to replace 1.2.3.4 with the IP you want to block )

Please note that this will not permanently block the IP.

it looks like you have mod_status installed (http://knetgb.biz/server-status/) . Open up your httpd configuration, and config it to allow everyone to access it.

After that, restart apache, and access http://knetgb.biz/server-status/ in your web browser. That will provide vital information regarding apache activity, From there, you will be able to tell if, and what apache processes are driving up server load.
