Colocation NY/NJ for the small guys ;)

    Hello All,

First time posting here. I've been reading for quite some time now and researching on colocation near my area and I must say, I am overwhelmed with the amount of knowledge and how great people are on here.

Anyway, I've been running my servers in-house for about 5 years now on a full t-1 and an SDSL line for redundancy and for the past year, the line has crawled and has been fully saturated? so instead of adding more lines (which is very costly) I started looking into reliable colo companies.

I guess you could call this an informative post for those who are looking for colo for a minimal # of servers. I needed :

    (2) 1U Servers.
    (2) remote reboot ports
    (1) 100Mbps ports
    1000gb of premium burstable bandwidth
    5-10 useable IPs
    Physical access a Plus

    I contacted the following :

    NAC.net
    choopa.com
    crnc.net
    dedicatednow.com
    thenynoc.com

I was a little hesitant at first to contact NAC, Choopa and CRNC as they seem to be the really big players around.

    NAC.net (Equinix)
    - No reply (1 week and counting after 2 phone calls)
    - Escorted access (not sure as I got two different answers)
    - Majority of good reviews (based on WHT Search)
    - We all know how good NAC bandwidth is

    Choopa.com (NAC)
    - Fast reply (3 days after phone call)
    - Access not allowed
    - Very good reviews (based on WHT Search)
    - Cable & Wireless, WorldComm, MFN, and Internap

    CRNC.net (Equinix/Telehouse)
    - Very fast reply (Got answered asap)
    - 24/7 Access with prior notification
    - Very good reviews (based on WHT Search)
    - Reliable fast network (not sure who they use)

    DedicatedNow (FortressITX)
    - Very fast reply (Got answered asap)
    - 24/7 Access (no prior notification needed)
    - Has mixed reviews
    - Above.net, Telehouse, Nlayer?, Level3?

    TheNYNOC
    - Very fast reply (Got answered asap)
    - No Access allowed
    - Only found 1 review about them
    - Peer1

Now price consideration, I was very much tempted to go DedicatedNow because of the low price 1u/1200gb for $99 as posted on their site but considering the mixed reviews, I decided to look around. I wouldn't mind paying a bit more for better service.

Surprisingly, NAC, Choopa and CRNC were all on the same price range as DN which was a delightful shock. Only theNYNOC quoted a ridiculous amount so I didn't even consider them.

NAC hasn't replied to me yet so I'm not going with them either.

So now I'm left with Choopa and CRNC. Both great providers but since CRNC allows access and James was a pleasure to deal with, I've decided to go with CRNC.

I'm meeting up with James next Thursday to plug-in the boxes

I look forward to joing the CRNC/James fanbase on here

    Cheers!

Somewhat of both. I've been researching and calling for almost a month. I've read so many posts of people looking for hosts or resellers for shared colo with not much success on the replies as most on here colo more than 1 or 2 servers.

Can you tell me how you contacted us? This is unusual, for us not to reply. I realise you went elsewhere, but I'd like to find out what happened here.

    Thanks.

I called in and gave my info and what I needed. The guy told me he would me email me everything. No reply for 2 days. I called back again and spoke to the same guy. Same reply. He'll email me asap and told me it might have been someone else. Waited a few more days and looked elsewhere.

    Just an update...

Well I met up with James today at the Equinix Data center in Secaucus, NJ. Very cool guy who knows his stuff. We brought the servers in, hooked it up and I must say. I am very very very happy. My servers are running like a champ now as compared to when I had a T1+SDSL connection.

The data center itself was very incognito. The building was beside shopping centers. The outside looked like a typical white warehouse with no signs at all. Once you get in the front door is a different story - hand scanners, security guards, the works. I even got my own nifty little sticker pass heh I can hardly imagine how much bandwidth runs through that place.

All in all, a very gratifying experience. The only thing that sucks in that place was cellphone reception. I had none.

Anyway I'm glad I went with James/CRNC and wouldn't hesitate to go with them again in the future. The personal attention James gives to his clients and knowing that your equipment is in good hands makes the deal a whole lot sweeter.

    Thank you James/CRNC. Rock on!

Frank, thanks for the info on your research. I'd like to verify something... 1 terabyte per month for 99 from CRNC? I went to their website and they're charging 175 a month for 1mpbs... I was looking at superbservers but I'll put CRNC back on the short list if they've got a terabyte a month package.

    Thanks!

Their site is not updated. You should definitely call and ask. I don't think it would be okay for me to post the quotes on here but like I said, they were all in the same ballpark which was a big surprise for me.

Didn't mean to break forum rules by posting numbers... my apologies. I've been on the phone a lot re: colo. and simply typed without considering this forums etiquette. I tried to edit, but of course I discovered the 15 minute edit rule.

    Thanks for the response, regardless!
