    Hosts, Servers and China!

Hi all! I am pretty familiar with web hosting but I do have a question… I plan to travel to China this summer and, so friends and family can keep up to date with my travels, I intend to create a web page complete with news / pictures etc.

My question is regarding China and internet access. I know that (in the past at least) internet access in China wasn’t always easy. Firstly individuals had to register with the police and a great internet firewall was setup to block (however badly) individuals viewing many non-Chinese websites.

Thankfully, from what I know, things are no longer as bad. However, I have been informed that internet access in China continues to be ‘an issue’.

    My question is as follows…

I am currently in England and would normally go with a UK based host. However, given that I will be in China when updating the site, should I still go with the UK host.

I am also aware that for a while website owners in china had to register with the police. Would I have to do this if my website was not hosted in China (obviously it would be updated from china but just not hosted in China)?

Finally, in regards to the great internet firewall, will I have any problem sending data and files (Via ftp) to my host? Indeed, there would be little point me setting up a UK host if it is impossible to access UK servers from China…

Sorry if this is all badly phrased – I’m at work and thus I am meant to be working… I'm not sure if anyone will be able to help... but i thought it was worth asking...

    DamoM,

I've personally never heard of anyone having issues FTPing files from China.

(Had quite a few amigos who went there on business, as well as for personal reasons and published their content in internet cafes quite easily).

About the 'registration' part, I'm quite clueless on that one.

That's a hard one. If you can't access UK websites from China you're pretty much screwed. If you can't access your website via HTTP you won't be able to transfer files via FTP...

All you need to do is research more into it (Google would help you alot) and find out from there. Chances are there'll be no problems at all, but it's better to be sure.

TheALiEN2005 should be absolutly correct. Otherwise there is no meaning in what we call world wide web :-) . Technically too, I do not see any problem in accessing UK hosts from China

It's rather the opposite, i.e. US providers blocking Chinese IPs (the practical result for the web surfer is the same).

CHINA: Government blocks religious websites, porn websites, RSF website etc.
Also, there is a general complaint that China blocks a lot of host. Do not know much. :-)

Hopefully none. By the looks of things, the only problem you're going to have is getting an internet connection in the first place, which (hopefully) TheALiEN2005 can help you with!

I'm in Beijing and have never had any problems working with my US-based hosts (pair and Dreamhost).

ssh access from China is not blocked, nor is VPN access. So you can use fully secure methods to work with your hosts that are not interceptable by the Government censors.

Getting around the web censors is easy as well. Just use an ssh tunnel through your non-China based webhost and you're done. Or use Tor.

I have heard of China blocking certain hosts its probably as techno said they block sites with certain stuff but i do believe atleast from what i have seen that they lock out certain IP's so if a "offensive site" is on your host then it could be blocked.

To know for sure what you should do is contact the ISP your are planning on using in china and ask them if they can go to your website from their servers to test weither it is accessible. This will answer you question.

You could also try to connect to a public proxy from china...
