How to check if Software RAID-1 is working?
I've setup software RAID-1 on my servers SATA disks. The question now: How do I check if the software RAID is working?
Just pull one SATA-cable during runtime and see what happens? This sounds a little bit to cruel to my server I think... or is it?
Check the mdstat file:
# cat /proc/mdstat
Your looking for a line like this:
md0 : active raid1 sdb5 sda5 32000 blocks [2/2] [UU]
If the last part ever changes you know one of the drives has failed, ie if it changes to "[2/1] [U_]" then the second drive is out.
Yeah, but I want to check that the mirror-drive takes over if the master-drive dies.
I also want to check if the master-drive keeps running if the mirror-drive dies.
If the mdstat file is fine you should be set. The only real way to test this any further is like you said, pull the plug on one (although not something I would recomend doing very often if at all)
OK, thanks! It looks fine right now at least
Today I have setup RAID on swap and /tmp as well... how do you do it? Do you think it's useless to mirror swap and /tmp?
