Thread: Registrar Hold

    Question Registrar Hold

I'm looking at a domain name on whois.sc and it is listed as "On-Hold (generic)"
Not pending delete, just on-hold. I checked it on internic.org and it shows this:

    Domain Name: XXX.COM
    Registrar: GO DADDY SOFTWARE, INC.
    Whois Server: whois.godaddy.com
    Referral URL: http://registrar.godaddy.com
    Name Server: PARK9.SECURESERVER.NET
    Name Server: PARK10.SECURESERVER.NET
    Status: REGISTRAR-HOLD
    Updated Date: 22-jun-2005
    Creation Date: 12-may-2004
    Expiration Date: 12-may-2006

From what I've gathered on the forum, I thought this would drop on 28-jun-05, but it is still not available.

Is there something special about the status being 'registrar hold' and not being 'on-hold (pending delete)'?

Basically, as I see it, the owner of the domain did not renew it. So GoDaddy placed a Registrar-Hold on the name and fronted the registration fees for the next year hoping that the guy will renew it. So GoDaddy usually gives a 30 to 45 day grace period. After that grace period it goes into a Redemption Period for 30 days where the previous owner can still get it back by paying a redemption fee. After that there is a 5 day Pending-Delete period.

    See: http://www.domain-retriever.com/images/life.gif

You might run it through the FreeWho Status Checker once it goes into the RedemptionPeriod. It's usually pretty accurate as to when it will drop: http://freewho.com/checker/index.php

That is what I was thinking, it expired on 12-may-05, GoDaddy threw it into the pending-delete until 22-jun-05 (40 days?) then it should delete 6 days later which would be 28-jun-05.

Since it hasn't deleted, does that mean that GoDaddy 'owns' the domain for the next year?

I'll try the freewho.com site and see what it says.

Go Daddy's legal fine prints say they'll hold an expired name for
about 30 days before dropping the ball. But there's also a chance
    it's suspended for violating something.

Spam complaints, invalid WHOIS, who knows? You say it's expired
    according to Go Daddy's WHOIS?

Yes, going through godaddy whois doesn't shed anymore light on the issue.
This is all that it says:

    WHOIS Search Results for: XXX.COM

No match for "XXX.com" in the registrar database.

    Registry Status: REGISTRAR-HOLD
Perhaps it was renewed by the owner and they reversed the charge on godaddy so now they are stuck with the registration?

Never run into a 'registrar-hold' like this before.

I had one on backorder with godaddy and when it expired it went to
No match for "xxx.com" in the registrar database.

    Registry Status: REGISTRAR-HOLD

Can GoDaddy just claim the domain for themselves without it becoming publically available for the 'first come first serve' (in case the previous owner doesn't renew) ??

On subdomain sales alone it could make loads of cash, as it will probably take a while before the new .xxx extention will be active.
And in case .xxx would be restricted for porn businesses, .xxx.com subdomains could make major sales amongst hobbyist/amateur adult-site webmasters

Gee, Gerrit, I don't want to speak for DaytonKnight, but I think he was using "XXX.com" to designate a sample domain name that he didn't want to reveal.

Yes, it was meant as a placeholder, I'd imagine the owner of xxx.com will have to die before they let that expire on them.
