They are both great... both use top quality bandwidth (LT has savvis, versaweb has InterNAP) and not too expensive. LT is a bit bigger, and more reviews are available (ignore the negative ones, I love LT). Also, maybe look at hostworkz.com, dedicatedplace.com, or isnnetworks.net who are resellers of LT, and are managed (and cheaper).

LT is self-managed while versaweb, I believe, is managed.

I would honestly have to go with Layeredtech.com. I'm a customer of Versaweb and I have never experienced such horrific support with a host except for Managed.com and AIT.com. I've had my fair share of experience with a good number hosts. I had submitted a few tickets earlier when I was newly a customer of Versaweb, although they were just simple questions they were replied to in a fairly timely manner. My last two tickets actually requiring support have been ridiculous in response time. Their support is almost non-existant in some cases.

For example, my last two tickets, heres the timeline:

Submit a ticket regarding lack of speed on my server
    1) Posted on 23 Apr 2005 10:26 PM
    2) Replied to on 23 Apr 2005 10:35 PM (great response time)
    3) Ticket still unresolved, provided more information and speed tests, Posted on 24 Apr 2005 12:48 AM
    4) Updated ticket with more speed tests; Posted on 24 Apr 2005 01:06 AM
    5) Waited patiently, no reply in 5 days, updated ticket with request for status; Posted on 29 Apr 2005 02:11 AM
    6) Still no reply, asking if they can provide feedback a month later, Posted on 23 May 2005 01:08 AM
    7) Waited 3 more days, decided to open another ticket stating my previous ticket hasn't been replied to in over a month; Posted on 25 May 2005 11:09 PM
    8) Ticket was finally replied to; Posted on 26 May 2005 08:56 AM
    9) Few ticket updates working to fix the issue, resolution; Posted on 28 May 2005 04:52 PM

    Ticket submitted: 23 Apr 2005 10:26 PM
    Ticket resolution: 28 May 2005 04:52 PM

It took over a month to get that ticket finally resolved which actually took me creating another ticket to get more attention after several updates in the old one were not replied to. They had to force the 100mbps switch in full duplex mode for the 100mbps port upgrade. Something entirely out of my control. Rob apologized for the month long delay in resolution.

Now I'm going through the same thing with a simple PTR/reverse DNS request.

Submit a ticket regarding a PTR request on 1 IP
    1) Posted on 17 Jun 2005 01:12 AM
    2) No reply, waiting patiently for 10 days then requested an update; Posted on 27 Jun 2005 11:47 AM
    3) Still no reply to this date, coming up on 2 weeks.

    Ticket submitted: 23 Apr 2005 10:26 PM
Ticket resolution: No reply to date

Their only support channel to have a reply back from a real person (that I'm aware of) are tickets so you're left with no other option if they don't reply. I don't know if you have to submit a ticket, wait a few days, then submit another ticket stating the old one wasn't replied to everytime you need support. If I've ever had an issue with a ticket not being replied to, theres usually alternate means of support but in this case, theres nothing you can do except wait.

Versaweb's network seems to be great, only one outage so far and no issues otherwise. Not sure what to do with them as far as support goes. I mean, how can you realistically operate a server effectively with a host that provides "managed server" packages with apparent "24x7 helpdesk support" and your tickets are ignored for weeks, or even over a month in my case?

I'd go with LT, I know they provide decent support vs. horrible support and close to the same pricing scheme. That's my suggestion.

Just an update. I guess Rob (owner of Versaweb) read my post and completed my PTR request, replied in the ticket and apologized for the delay.

I'd still go with LT though unfortunately, it's just too damn frustrating not having good support.

Why LT not having good support?

Depends on what kind of support do you need. You need to know that LT is unmanaged so you can't just get all the support you need.

MrAdmin, self-managed server is not your choice. If you are looking for a managed dedicated server, try http://www.beachcomber.net, not the cheapest you can find, but IMO they are the best

I would say layeredtech, but they wouldnt be the best choice if your looking for a managed server, I would recommend resellerworkz.com (which gets servers from layeredtech) I'v been with them for more than 7 months, and i am a very happy customer

He was referring to VersaWeb and not Layered Tech.

same here, just go with Layeredtech.

I'm a customer of both of them. Versaweb's ticket response is horrible and it takes weeks to get a response. They don't have private VLANs and LIVE bandwidth graphs. And the bandwidth graphs are so strange 'cause my monthly data transfer is ususally 60-80GB. But at Versaweb, it inscreases to 300GB with some strange outbound traffic. Fortunately, it's a dedicated server, not a colo.

I would fully second the notion Raptor stated. If you are looking for a 'decent' managed server for a cheap price, look at www.beachcomber.net. I have had a server with them for years and after all that time, I couldn't be happier with them. Their support is top notch, always replies within a few minutes and they provide great management with all their servers. All of their server packages include Cpanel/Fantastico/RVSkin with the price so they're actually quite inexpensive.

EDIT: Just noticed they have a post in the Dedicated Server Offers forum, http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showth...hreadid=418480 if you want to check them out. The AMD 2800 is a decent server for fairly cheap.

Guys, LayeredTech provides horrible support. They have unprofessional team. And they even do not test hardware before they sell it. One of our servers had HDD issues, another one - RAM issues, we lost a month trying to force LT team to find out the reasons and then only they tested hardware and replaced bad cards/HDD.

When we requested OS Reload for 1 of our servers, we waited 20 hours!!! All this time the server (and 150 sites hosted on this server) was down. And LT team did nothing to reload the OS faster. I agreed to pay for faster support, but they do not agree.

So... you are a hostage of their lazy team.

MrAdmin: again, LayeredTech will only provide hardware/network support. They will not manage the server for you: ie. if the mail server is not working or you need to install a virus scanner they won't be able to help you.

I've never had problems with LT's support personally but I haven't had to call on them much. Either of these two options are not very good choices although if Versaweb didn't have such horrible support, they'd be a decent host. Pricing is quite inexpensive and network is quite nice.

Just FYI, this post had nothing to do with us getting your PTR done. One of our DNS servers had been having some issues, and we wanted to correct that before your PTR entry was made. We went ahead and made the entry without fixing the issue due to your second ticket being placed.

I do apologize if our support has been a bit slow as of late - we are a bit understaffed currently after bringing all of our support in-house rather than outsourcing it, and are in the process of bringing some new people in. We have slowed our growth significantly to try and give our customers the best support possible given the situation, but rest assured that improvements are up and coming.

yep, have to add my 2 cents - am an unhappy versweb customer.

Our servers go through a phase of being glacial or completely are unresponsive at least every couple of weeks (see other posts on WHT). Support is slow.

Also have a server maintenance request that had been accepted sitting as an open ticket for a couple of months now. We kind of laugh about it - surely a support team would at some point want to close a ticket this old.

    MrAdmin.

I think that your need to review a bit your aproach when looking for a dedicated server.
First, you must decide wich one of those companies got the best(for you) network and basic support (reboots,OS reloads, hardware replacement).

Second ,dont count too much on a cheap "managed server".These days "managed can mean a lot of things and may not include what are you looking for.
A cheap managed server from a reseller in 70% of cases means that you will face an outsouced support. Not that is a bad thing but your chain of communication between you,the end user and your server provider is a bit longer in case something is going downhill with your server(hardware issue, quick reboot needed.....)

Best thing is to get an unmanaged server and hire an admin, this way you will not be forced to come here and yell that you have unanswered tickets, bad resolutions on tickets....
