South America, especially countries that are in a state of civil unrest, is currently a great place for Americans to visit. Try Argentina; the fares are extremely low, the hotels are cheap, the food is some of the best you'll have in the world, and the people are very friendly and welcoming.

I've heard the same. The only disadvantage for me would be that they speak Portugese, whereas all the other South and Central American countries are perfect opportunities in which to practice my Spanish.
Not sure if youíve already been there, but how about Mexico?
Itís a great country, food is fantastic, people are really friendly, atmosphere is always great, and in general itís pretty impossible to have a bad time. Itís certainly worth the visit if youíve not been there.
Your countryís foreign office should have a website telling you which countries are safe to visit, and which countries arenít. It should also say whether only parts of that country are dangerous, or whether itís the whole country, and whether it advises against ALL travel to that country, or all but necessary travel.
