That's not a fair comparison, as distance plays a role.

Sites like Google, and Yahoo are hosted in DCs around the globe allowing for fast access all over.

Anything on a content network like Akamai should have low pings from just about any somewhat decent network.

3ms is extremely low. I'd say the IPs you're hitting are in the same building.

For a reality check... going round trip coast to coast across the US will take around 60ms on a good network.

In all seriouness, the above pings are not bad at all. This all has to do with distance and those are *not* 'slow'.

You cant ping from one location and use that to compare!

Latency changes very much over distance. It depends where the tier 1 location is you are pinging.

I don't understand how someone who has been registered on this forums for almost a year, and has that many posts, hasn't yet gotten that everything isn't located in one location?

    have less than 3ms

    Cogent netwoks have 30ms
    http://www.dnsstuff.com/tools/ping.c...rverpronto.com

But top tier DC are slower with 40ms

It is very sad to see that top tier networks are slower than
Different providers can have different setting on their routers. Some might put lower priorities for icmp packet. Sometime, you may also see request timed out or 100ms+ on your traceroute when a router does BGP scanning, yet the packet went through just fine.

I'd bet he knows that, but just doesn't realize that the speed of light is actually the limiting factor!

I see some very nice results to our main Sitelutions site...

    Pinging www.sitelutions.com [66.117.40.20]:

    Ping #1: Got reply from 66.117.40.20 in 2.1ms [TTL=58]
    Ping #2: Got reply from 66.117.40.20 in 1.9ms [TTL=58]
    Ping #3: Got reply from 66.117.40.20 in 2.0ms [TTL=58]
    Ping #4: Got reply from 66.117.40.20 in 2.0ms [TTL=58]

    Done pinging www.sitelutions.com!

That said, however, this ping test doesn't show much, as it will favor networks that are nearby...

yahoo and google use dns tricks to point you to the closet server to your connection.

When you test places like TP and LT your testing against a static location also LT and TP do not represent the top tier networks in everyones eyes.

I would test a wider variety:

    www.ev1.net
    www.gnax.com
    www.he.net
    www.servermatrix.com
    www.cihost.com
    www.valueweb.com
    www.1and1.com
    www.rackspace.com

That list should give you a better representation of ping times in relation to wherever your testing from, but I will get completely different results from my location..

the dns tricks that you are referring to are GeoIP tactics, which take your IP and use a Geographic IP system to locate the nearest cluster of servers to serve up the site. You can tell it very easily with Google because if run a proxy that is in Japan for instance, Google will automatically take you to www.google.jp.

As someone said higher up. Google and Yahoo are both clients of Akami...as are most large content sites. Akami is a company that provides targetted content delivery. If you are accessing google or yahoo then chances are you aren't going more then 200 or 300 miles to a datacenter. Unless of course you live in an incredibly rural location.
