I saw "up 283 days, 1 user, load average: 0.03, 0.04, 0.03" and thought that had been too long.

    Then I stumbled on "up 406 days, 1 user, load average: 0.00, 0.00, 0.00."

    /me looks around a bit more. -=\

    I'm cheating big time

These are 2 HP9000 L class servers running HPUX

Linux has a bit to go to be as stable as unix.

I did have a server that i decomissioned a few months ago that had been running happily for over 4 years.

I run this software on my server at home. Not something I'd waste time with on a production machine, but it's fun to fool around with at home.

The machine is basically the cheapest box I could put together at the time I built it (mid 2001) while still buying brandname parts. Debian unstable, of course. The thing doesn't seem to want to upgrade to 2.6 though...

You could make it for 100 years, there is no "longest uptime". If you plan on keeping your machine up to date with the latest kernels then you are not going to have nearly the uptime of some people that have posted above.

Thats true if you have a public server then it needs to be kept up to date with new kernels, security patches etc anyway

And if' you get zombie processes then only a reboot can get rid of them.

What you need to differentiate between is scheduled and unscheduled, if you box only has a uptime of say 30 days then it's not bad if it was only rebooted to apply updates which customers were advised about.

But if you uptime is repeatedly low due to power/hardware/os failures then that would be a concern.

How about: What is the longest uptime on a PUBLIC box?
I've nailed 90, but anything beyond that and it begins to become a cespool of script kiddies.

    [With my personal boxes though]

contratulation from running insecure servers. If I were a customer looking for hosting, I would not go with company that has hundred of days of uptime. It does not impress me. How many kernel upgrades/patches have you skipped?

    FHDave

There are other things that can be done to stop exploits -- updating the kernel isn't always required however I would personally recommend it.

    Easier to update the kernel.

I'm still pretty new at linux, but I have managed to keep my dedicated server up for a month straight at one point. Then MySQL crashed, and refused to restart, so I ended up rebooting the whole server

Linux servers uptime is not that great, due to the number of updates which require reboots, but as for our DNS servers, they run FreeBSD and have not required a reboot in quite a while:

    s63# uptime
    6:03PM up 105 days, 1:53, 1 user, load averages: 0.01, 0.01, 0.00

Previously we had a free hosting server up for about 180 days before it was decommissioned. I imagine our DNS servers should be up for another 100-200 days before they will require a reboot.

As long as your outages are not long, reboots aren't usually much of a problem - especially if they are scheduled.
