Network Is Often Gone - Why?
The box is up, as I was told from the DC, but network is gone - No Ping, No HTTP, No SSH. Once they reboot the box, everything is fine.
What could cause that? I run both chkrootkit and rkhunter, found nothing.
From Apache logs and /var/log/messages, found no weired signs.
How do I tell if it is a network card failure, hard drive failue? Is it possible for me to see them from the log files?
Hm you have a firewall running or something?
You could explain your dc and ask them if they want to replace your NIC.
At prompt if you type 'dmesg' what do you receive?
Do you notice a lot of failed SSH login attempts?
I got reply from DC as
So what does this mean? FreeBSD 5.3 will kill NIC? I have never heard of it. How could an OS kill NIC every 1-3 days? What wil the static arp entry help at all?
I just had the same problem with another Freebsd customer as you are having. I was able to add an static arp entry to the switch ..... It seems that the NIC some how just stops responding.
It seems that now all of the troubles I have is the hardware based, not software base.
Did you ask them to replace the NIC? This could very well be that unless you have a heavy firewall.
