Anyone here using Solaris ? please help

hi everyone

I install solaris last week. And play around with it. I think unix is mostly same with linux (fedora) which i've been using for a year, am i right ?.

Like you guys already know about this when you type in fedora:

Code:
root@server [~]# cd /home
root@server [/home]#

but in Solaris , when i type cd /home or other directories then it doesn't show anything:

Code:
#cd /home
#

What should i do ? please help
Thanks

try the following command:

echo $PS1

or maybe run bash first

solaris can be *similar* to linux - its not the same

bash

Well its not really a big deal. You just have to remember where you are. If you forget where you are just type:
pwd

How do you like Solaris as a personal OS?

The thing is, in Solaris (and most standard unix variants), the prompt is NOT going to be updated to show you the path - you're just going to get the '#' to indicate that you're root. Standard users usually have different prompts, but the root prompt is (historically) unchanged.

You're in /home/, just use 'ls' to see the files, and if you forget where you are, 'pwd', just like Linux, BSD, etc.

If you want to change your prompt, put something like this in the .bash_profile for that user

PS1="[\u@\h \W]\\$ "

(I'd recommend keeping the root prompt as the hash though)

Actually, you're right in that it's probably tcsh, but the real point is that most unix variants make a point of having a very obvious root prompt - even if they WERE using bash, they'd likely set the prompt to '#' anyway.
