    Dedicated hosting in China?

I am working on a Chinese sponsored web project that, although international in scope, will be mostly accessed from China. As an option to offshore hosting, we are very much interested in the possibility of having this project hosted 'close to home'. To cut to the chase: can anyone recommend a reputable host in mainland China or Hong Kong that does not lie within any banned IP range?

    Requirements:

    - 2 GHz+
    - 1GB RAM
    - RAID-1
    - dedicated 100Mbps
    - 1000GB transfer
    - ability to choose server OS (preferably Debian or FreeBSD)
    - customer support in both Chinese and English a bonus
    - unmanaged/semi-managed (no need for CPanel etc.)

We are guessing it might be hard to find a reputable host matching the price level of hosts such as LayeredTech, but ideally the price would not be much over $100/month.

    Grateful for any recommendations,
    -Kris

I think one of the provider hosting4asia does in Hong Kong, you can try PM him for more details. I would recommend putting in HK instead rather than in China , easier to control.

I think you will need a license for your website if you want to host in China.

If you have that, hosting in China is the best since I heard that China firewall is very advanced now. The firewall will scan your emails and web pages when you download them inside the firewall. If "illegal contents" are found, your domain/ IP will be banned until the content is removed. So, you need to monitor your content closely, especially forum.

Nope, HK is by far one of the freeiest economy in the world unlike China which has a very restrictive environment. My feeling on China is that they arent really keen on "internet" but rather on their own "intranet".

There is something you have to know:
    1. You have to register your web site, otherwise you can't run
your site, especially if it's a commercial one.
    2. Reall Dedicated 100M Connection is not cheap, I doubt $100 if
    Far from enough.
    3. You can choose the OS by yourself.
    4. Traffic is not metered, usually, as long as it's reasonable.
    5. There different providers, and the speed varies. What is your main target visitors? Where are most of them located?
    6. Support in Chinese is of course no problem, but not sure about English. Most hosting sites have only Chinese Version homepage.

It's a non-commercial digital library project related to folklore, nothing controversial.

The main target is academics and students of Asian culture worldwide, but the brunt of the visitors will probably be from China. There will eventually be quite a lot of multimedia content on the site, hence the need for some decent hardware.

Thanks folks for all the enlightening replies so far, I am learning a lot about a hosting market I know next to nothing about. 谢谢你们帮忙!

No matter what your site is about, you have to register on
    a governmental site.
I am running a hosting company in China, I can help you on that.
But to tell you the truth, the real 100M port will be rather expensive.

For me, support in English is not a problem.

Sober, would you please PM me with a price quote for the server (see above) and various bandwidth options (we might have to skimp on the 100Mbps if it is going to be very expensive, but let us know how much). Also, I'd like to know what the url of your company and where in China you are located. Thanks!

BTW just a curious question, I always find Shanghai connection to be problematic, Beijing is slightly better, any particular reasons. Do PM me an indicative cost for a basic dedicated server in China if possible. Thanks

Please be noted that there is no freedom of speech in China

I read the news that you even have to register you Blog to Gov.

They can shut your server down without any notice and never pay back money

Cost of running business there are pretty high in terms of ***risk**

Well, well, who can be more familiar with someone in China himself

As long as you don't run sites with Adult/Porn Political contents,
and spend as little as 5 minutes to register your site
    you don't have such worry

    Yes I am.

I am afraid currently the governmental site in only available in CN
and you have to provide a local mobilephone number to
    receive the activation code

I am willing to help but my own number has already been used
    for registering my site
