We have a project that requires a GigE switch... ideally 16 ports or more. The switch is just going to be used on a private side network between some servers. We've found the SRW2016 from linksys is within budget $300-500 but have not found any good real-world reviews of this.
We probably don't need a managed switch right now but down the road there may be some traffic that will need to be assigned a CoS. Also some level of packet filtering may be useful for an "untrusted" box that may be connected to the private side. VLAN support is not really necessary.
Any recommendations about the SRW2016 or equivalents would be useful.
Cisco's options seem to be out of the price range.
