    measuring a computer fan

What is the proper way to measure a computer fan? I haven't had to do this for ages since I'm used to having the fan spaces and sizes listed with the case specifications. That said I can't remember how to measure the actual fan size. Is it from the center to the mounting point or some other way? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

IF it's a square, measure the sides. If it's a 80mm, its 80mm on both sides, and around 25mm thick.

My guess is that if it is round you measure the diameter. But I am not sure.
