I am looking for a Dual Core with DDR II RAM like asap wanting to buy now, on a 10 mbit unmetered or 3000Gb's of bandwith. No one seems to be doing DDR II Ram can you please post back on who does DDR II.
IIRC, DDR II is only available on systems with Intel-compatible chipsets, and you DEFINITELY do not want to go with Intel dual core. I know I sound like an AMD junky, but a Pentium D is not exactly the most stable processor (You'll be lucky if the plastic socket doesn't melt after about a week). :/ That leaves AMD, and I haven't seen any AMD dual core-compatible mobos with DDR II support, and that goes for server AND desktop boards. So, one or the other . Or, you could just buy a box like that and colo it.
There will never be DDRII on the current generation of Dual Core Opterons, as the memory controller is on chip and not on the motherboard. To enble DDRII RAM, they need to modify the actual Opteron chip - this we will probably only see in later revisions of the Opteron processor. This is one disadvantage of having the memory controller on chip.
DDR II is not a whole not faster as it higher latency than standard DDR. The lower latency DDR II RAM is fairly new, and quite expensive.
EDIT: The built in memory controller on the Opteron chip greatly reduces latency compared to having the memory controller on the North Bridge. This is one of the reaons the Opteron chips perform so well compared to old AMD processor and current Intel processors.
