Would you buy a 1tb hard drive?

    http://www.cdw.com/shop/products/def...spx?edc=574642

As you see they have them, but would you buy one? For home? Or do you run one on you're server...? Use it for music?...

What would you do with one?

If I would've buy 1, I'll use it for a backup dedicated server, to store daily backup files and stuff for all the servers...

But isn't putting all the backup files from all the servers onto one massive hard drive kind of risky? With all that important data from multiple servers, it would be tragic if it crashed.

I'm also curious as to what people use 1TB HDD's for these days. Seems like a waste of money to me.

I'd use it as a backup for my home computers. I have a few I distribute important files over (documents, digital images, movies, etc).

If it was a waste of money for everyone the manufacters wouldn't bother making them.

PVRs will always benefit from having larger disks. Especially as HDTV starts to take over from SDTV.

The film studios keep promising to release a movie version of itunes which will also fill disks up quickly. With the increase in high speed connections sites and online content will become much larger. The internet is definitly going to play a part in viewing TV in the future so large disks are going to be needed.

But isn't putting all the backup files from all the servers onto one massive hard drive kind of risky?
It's only a problem if the disks in your servers fail on the same day as your backup disk which is unlikely. Otherwise it is a good idea as it reduces costs.

I'd probably do the same thing

But other than that I'd soon be able to fill it up with downloads.

Would 1TB even be reliable? I could see it as being slow and prone to problems.

That Lacie disk is actually a few disks put togther in RAID-0 so its not a single disk. For DV editing its great but for long term storage..

But at 1Tb, it'll take longer to locate a particular sector...

I admit that 1TB would be cool and I probably can feel it up with junk, but for that price? No way. If you ever need 1TB for personal use, you need to start deleting stuff rathier than buying more HDD space...

    No!! I won't buy a 1TB HDD
    for my personal PC.

Actually i don't want any junk in
my HDD & apparently 1TB drive
is quite alluring for junk!! It will
    be a junk magnet

But, on my server i would love
    to have such thing, provided
by.. it has that necessary speed
to locate the data in due time.

I wouldnt bother. I'd spend the cash to setup a RAID array (RAID 1, 0+1, or 5).

Imagine if that sucker ever failed! What are you going to backup to? A tape drive? *snicker*

Maybe if I won the lottery so I could brag about it
    I'd much rather have a RAID-5 for databackup/storage.
    RAID-0 is nice too.

Sure, I would buy one! I'll wait for the price to drop a bit lower though... oh say, a couple hundred dollars lower.

I figure if you get 4x Maxtor SATA Ultra16 7200 250GB hard drive
    Drive Capacity 250GB
    Internal or External Internal
    Interface SATA/150
    Rotation Speed 7200 RPM
    Compatibility PC/MAC
    Manufacturer Maxtor
    Manufacturer Model L01S250
    Cache Buffer Size 16MB
    Data Transfer Rate ATA/133
    Average Seek Time ¡Ü9ms

That would be even cheaper then the 1tb hd...

    Because:
4x $179.98 = $719.92 + state tax, 5% here in md it would cost a total of about: $1000 and you gain sorta from it because u gain $400 instead of buying that 1tb hd, and u gain even more, because if 1x 250gb hd fails you just replace that, u dont loose it all.. and have to pay the high price again

I would buy one if I could. I would use it to backup the couple of computers I have.

How would you manage to remember where you placed a particular file? I always need to use search to find files on my computer.

Yes, I will buy a 1TB hdd if it was cheap. I would dump all my cds in it .. And currently I save TV shows on DVDs, it would be better to use a 1tb hdd

Although I don't have a single HD over 200gb, I do have a little over 1.4 tb across my multiple fileservers I have on my network. Currently I am using just about 1 tb and thats without having any pr0n, DVD movies/TV shows, etc on them (does have about 20gb of legal mp3's though).
