    What is a DMZ?

Can someone explain to me what a DMZ is? What do I need to know about it if I'm trying to setup a hosting service from within an office network?

DMZ stands for De-Militarized Zone. It is most commonly used to host web/email/ftp/application servers on a seperate physical port using serperate firewall rules than the LAN ports.

basically what it allows you do to is configure the LAN ports to deny all inbound, but allow all the common internet services through the DMZ.

it is not limited to just common internet ports. You can configure the firewall rules to allow anything through the DMZ.
