dotCanada/AffordableHost not honorable

After all the downtime on my account with AffordableHost after the dotCanada buyout, I asked for a pro-rated refund on 5/25/05. I finally received a reply today, 15 days later (What service!). They are refusing to honor AffordableHost's refund policy. I expected this, but wanted to give them a chance to respond.

After 3 years of great service from Affordablehost, I've just started making annual payments on the 2 accounts I have there too, since I felt comfortable with their service. Then this sellout. So I'm about $60 in the hole now. The best they could offer me was 2 more months free. 2 free months of horrid service? No thanks. I moved all my websites to another host now and am just glad to be rid of AffordableHost.

Will post a review of my new host after a few months, but so far, so good.

There is another thread where AffordableHost is discussed with some comments from one of the owners: http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showth...t&pagenumber=2

I haven't heard any great things about them since Tina sold them. Not good.

There are some bad reviews going on now on affordable host. I think this is a pattern, every time a hosting company sells their clients the "new" hosting company starts getting a bad reputation, has someone said human being has habits... that cant be broke

In this PARTICULAR case you are wrong, my friend.

Just try to experience the dotCanada (the buyer of AH) customer UN-support, and you will change your mind.

Those guys have either no clue or no resources to be a provider for 20'000 websites. Period. I haven't seen such amateurish handling of customers for long time.

After neglecting my ticket for eons, these folks had the nerve to send me an invoice for another year worth of hosting yesterday.

I went to my existing ticket and left a message to cancel my account due to the lack of service. I received a RESPONSE IN 15 MUNUTES saying they would cancel it for me. I find it highly ironic since they neglected the ticket for so long. These people are a joke! And a bad joke at that!

I first read the subject of this thread and thought it said, "dotCanada/AffordableHost not horrible", I thought to myself, what a nice change, then realised.

pcglue, I have been caught up in this whole fiasco myself, I have actually purchased a dedicated server from Simon, at DIY Hosting, a week or two ago, so I have finally managed to get my clients and myself away from DotCanada.

Needless to say, for those still at DotCanada, it is time to move on, in terms of WHT threads. We have seen more than enough about DotCanada's recent mess that we ever care to share. That is not directly targeted at you, pcglue, just the community in general.

They have been getting a lot of bad publicity lately. A lot of troubled clients have left, and more are leaving due to the sale to dotCanada.

Whether they were going downhill before dotCanada bought them, I dunno, but I know if you require a well running server that is up a resonable amount of time, it is hit and miss with AH.

I also find that they have no good spam filtering either... I had spamassasin on and it just flowed right through, but Outlook caught it. Maybe there is something to configuring spamassasin to filter better, but I don't have time to learn all that and play with it.

I get great spam filtering from my new web host and I don't have to touch a thing.

I'm going to jump in again and try and give a bit of credit back to AffordableHost.

In 90% of the recent threads about the fiasco at DotCanada, the OP has often made the mistake of saying it is AffordableHost who is the problem, or AffordableHost/DotCanada. I'll openly admit, I have made this mistake a few times also.

I would just like to say though, that AffordableHost didn't have too much to do with the current problems. Once Tina sold AffordableHost, it was no longer there, it was then, officially, DotCanada.

Before the sale, there were the joejob issues, of which were, AffordableHost's issue. Once the sale had taken effect though, it was all down to DotCanada. DotCanada went well over their own heads, and made a total mess of what was a respectable service.

Also, from what I have seen, it only seems to be the Callisto (now Laurier) server that has had the severe problems. I am not 100% sure about this, so somebody please correct me if I am wrong.

I would like to get across, though, that we shouldn't really be saying things such as "AffordableHost are not honorable" and everything of such nature. I don't know the full story, and no member of the public will ever know the full story, of what has and is going on at DotCanada, but I would happily say, that 99% of the problems are due to DotCanada, and not AffordableHost.

If you go to affordablehost.com and click on Members Area (top right corner) and then click on Announcements, you will see a list of their servers, reboot units, etc. that have been problematic for the last 30 days (it only shows the last 30 days).
