hi i wondered what other members on wht program their websites in , ie html , java ,php etc .
i know some html and have programmed in basic on and off over the years .
also what are pro's and cons of html, java ,php scripts etc ?
I use HTML, CSS and PHP to do sites. PHP is a scripting language so you can use variables and functions and do a bunch of other stuff. The main cool thing about PHP is the ability to use text files and databases to keep data over time. PHP is used for many things, including most forum engines. CSS(cascading style sheets) are used to format a whole document. It is extremely helpful in formatting pages and has many other tricks. I highly recommend learning it. Java is a programming language, not used as much in websites. I know it, but i don't suggest learning it unless you wanna program games or an applet or something.
Now if you want any kind of processing of user data, for instance shopping carts, searching, etc.. you will need some method of handling this on a server-side level. This is where scripting/programming "server-side" languages fit in, like php, asp, .net, java, ruby, python, perl, etc...
.net and java you will have a harder time finding free / cheap hosting. These are commonly seen with "enterprise" developers, governments, large companies, etc.. php you see more often with web developers for small business to personal sites. Its free technology so its readily available on either windows or a *nix flavor.
