Question

Hey everyone!

I was wondering if you could give me some advice and help. I've just ordered one of the $99 servers from 4webspace.com and got my details through today. Now I don't know if this problem is a really stupid one or not, as this is my first time working with a server so please forgive me if the answer is really obvious

The domain name I am going to be using with it I registered with another company a few months ago. I know I need to change the nameservers from the company I registered it with to my new server and was wondering what I now put in? For example do I just put in the IP address I was given with the server or do I put ns1.mydomain.com and ns2.mydomain.com?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me!

First, what are you using for DNS? If you are using your server to run DNS, then this has to be set up first, before anything will really work. You'll end up pointing your domain (at your registrar) to the new nameservers you set up on the machine.

The domain I am wanting to use is robintunney.com. I'm just getting used to the server's interface at the moment but so far I've went to the control panel and the DNS settings section and put in the following:

DNS Settings for robintunney.com

Start of Authority (SOA) Configuration

robintunney.com 216.234.186.44

http://www.robintunney.com 216.234.186.44

216.234.186.44/24 robintunney.com

The IP address I've used above is the one sent to me by 4webspace.com, have I got it right so far?

I think you are missing a crucial part of the equation here.

It seems to me that you haven't set up your RaQ to run DNS though it (nor are you using any sort of other method to run DNS). Without this, your domain is not going to resolve.

So you have three choices:
Run DNS from your machine itself (ask tera-byte how to set this up).
See if you can use their DNS (again, ask them).
Use a outside DNS service (such as mydomain.com or centralinfo.net).

I think the IP address that you listed is probably the IP address of the server itself. You must set up your domain (at your registrar) to point to another server (or to the RaQ itself if you are setting up your nameserver on it which I don't think you entirely get - so it might not be the best idea, ask tera-byte if this is somethig you want to do), and *then* set up the domain in your DNS and on the server to point to the IP address you listed.

You'll be able to point any domain you want to that same IP address (by setting up the DNS to point to the IP address), and the server will take care of directing the vistor to the proper place based on name.

What exactly are you goping to be using the server for? Meaning, how many domain are you going to be putting on this server? If it is just one, then let me know and I'll DNS it for you. If you have many you want to put on, then you'll want to find something you can do yourself (since it will be irritating for you to contact me every time).
