Apache is probably the best commercial web server, but it depends on what you're doing. If you're serving up millions of images, it makes no sense to use Apache, and therefore something like thttpd is the best. The best "all around" web server, is hands down Zeus. But it is extremely expensive (and usually well worth it).

If you look at all the webservers available the one with the best track record, large user base, features and performance I would have to go with Lighttpd.

If you're not a confident admin, need a GUI to work within and need a quick apache replacement then Litespeed would be the best choice.

For best performance nothing can trump Cherokee. Its use of pthreads pushes it over the edge and has been clocked at 20,000 requests per second.

Zeus has an interesting feature set but I've found it difficult to setup and not worth the cost when looking at the alternatives above.

Apache with Squid infront of it can also do well since you proxy slow connections to apache and reduce forking calls.

In terms of OS's to run download servers from I tend to prefer Freebsd for its ease of use in configuring things like file descriptor limits, kqueue, and one of the few working sendfile implementations.

well, porn is the first thing that comes to mind. Shoutcast servers? Streaming media servers? Hell, something as simple as a slashdot or anandtech probably pushes that much bandwidth on any given afternoon.

Despite their popularity, I seriously doubt slashdot or anandtech would be using GigE and utilizing them to the limits.

However, it may spike pretty close to that during peak hours.

Lol im quite amazed to see this discussion jump from shouting out possible hosts for the topic starter to compiling own apache clones, oh and dont forget the warez thing, and then at the end of page 3 we get back ontopic

    /Ontopic
I dont think that its that strange of a question really. I mean i might be pissing ons someones personal secrets here but i know a certain Provider wich (is known thoughout whole europe) has 9 gigE Warez machines running. And i dont even think they care :? As long as it gets paid for i guess, and i seriously dont even think that the amout exceeds the 5grand you mentioned.

If you are only gonna use it for files, why not put it here in NL ? I think that i could hook up something nice for 5grand

    Post Thanks everyone!

    Hi,

Wow, thanks for all the replies! I appreciate it very much.

Would some of you be able to answer the second part of my question which was if anybody knew of reliable hosts that do unmetered packages. Perferably hosts that do unmetered packages over 100 mbits/sec. The server would only be used for downloading files. Not gaming, not warez, not porn.

    So far I know of:

    ev1servers.net - $1995/month for 100 mbits/sec unmetered.

    orangefiber.com - $2000/month for 200 mbits/sec unmetered.

    crucialparadigm.com - $2600/month for 200 mbits/sec unmetered.

If anyone knows of any other hosts, I'd appreciate it very much if you could list them.

If anyone has feedback about the above hosts, please let me know as I am considering using the later two as they are more economical in pricing.

Thanks again everyone for taking the time to reply to this thread. I really do appreciate what everyone has said and I've read all of your posts mindfully.

To the people who say "That much bandwidth is for Warez!"

Heh I post here all the time looking for cheap bandwidth and the site I look for that for has pushed 580mbit. That push was actually limited by my server config, otherwise my techs and myself estimated it would have hit ~800mbit.

    Nothing I do is illegal.

Try downloading a 130mb file on average 26k times day and that is just part of a site that has 500GB of files online.

I doubt some people have heard of the "Leeeroy Jenkins" phenom, but it was very real and very popular.

If you want to get great pricing / service on bandwidth I would suggest contacting a service provider that has commits and almost sells the BW at or near cost (since their primary business relys on the lower cost BW).

DNS Made Easy does this all of the time and I have heard of clients getting pricing similar to the following (depending on the quality of bandwidth you want to get from them):

    100 Mbps for $1200 to $2200
    200 Mbps for $2200 to $4000
    500 Mbps for $5000 to $10,000

Note -- these prices are just a rough idea of what I believe they are offering, you'll want to contact them for current pricing information (http://host.dnsmadeeasy.com/).

$5000 sounds like a reasonable price for an unmetered GE via Cogent.

Hmmm.... 1000Mbps for $5k on a month to month contract, rather hard to come by, I think.

Even Cogent doesn't get down to that price, even on multi-gigabit deals.

Some companies might be willing to sell at that price, but there's definitely an element of overselling in there.

In terms of users not actually using allotted bandwidth, we have many several customers on 100Mbps, 200Mbps, and even some customers on 500Mbps unmetered servers that do regularly max out their connections.

    Cogent bad?

    Hi all,

I received many offers and noticed that Cogent is priced a lot lower than the rest.
    Is Cogent that bad?

    Quote from dnsmadeeasy.com:

Here is our current pricing for unmetered bandwidth colo.

    HE / Cogent blend
    100 Mbps for $1200
200 Mbps (copper Gige) for $2200
300 Mbps (copper Gige) for $3250
500 Mbps (copper Gige) for $5000

    ServerCentral
    100 Mbps for $2700
200 Mbps (copper Gige) for $4400
300 Mbps (copper Gige) for $6525
500 Mbps (copper Gige) for $9500

    BTN
    100 Mbps for $2000
200 Mbps (copper Gige) for $3900
300 Mbps (copper Gige) for $5850
500 Mbps (copper Gige) for $8600

With any of these deals you can use a dedicated server(s).
You can also combine multiple machines and have a set of machines
    (instead
of just one server) share the above listed bandwidth prices.

    Pentium 4 3.0Ghz - 800Mhz FSB - Northwood Core
    1GB ECC RAM ( 2 x 512 MB)
    Gig NICs
    80GB 7200 RPM Hard Drive
$55 per month for the first server
$85 per month for every additional server (share the above bandwidth
    at 100
    Mbps for each server)
$105 per month for every additional server (share the above bandwidth
    at
    1000 Mbps for each server)

Dual Xeon 2.8 Ghz (800 FSB)
    1 GB DDR2 ram
    160 GB (7200 RPM) drive
$75 per month for the first server
$105 per month for each additional server (share the above bandwidth at
    100
    Mbps each server)
$125 per month for each additional server (share the above bandwidth at
    1000
    Mbps each server)

Custom configurations can also be made to any of your machines for
additional fees also (more memory, hard drive space, etc..).

With any of our offerings (colo or dedicated) we include free remote
    reboot
vie a BayTech / APC remote reboot unit.

KVM over IP can be added for an additional $50 per month.

All of these prices are only available by check (credit cards can not
    be
    used for these prices).

Please let us know if you would like a formal quote. All we would need
    to
know is the server specification and the bandwidth requirement (and
    provider).

    ---

I'm leaning towards the 500 Mbps for $5000 of HE/Cogent. Good deal?

    Thanks again everyone!

Cogent is not that bad, personally, I would rate them ahead of HE and several others, such as Williams, especially in the middle of the country. it seems HE only really peers on the coasts, adding up to some terrible routes, while Cogent has some good peering nationwide, with their acquisitions, etc. They have definitely increased quality over the past year and a half or so.
