A little bit of history on this site. This started off as a utility on my writing site and a few months ago I put it up on it's own domain. It started making money pretty quickly but it was sandboxed by google. Most of the traffic was coming from Ask Jeeves. This last month google started indexing it (see below) and it continues to spider it well.
Revenue (All from Adsense)
Jan - $54.81
Feb - $77.62
Mar - $81.93
Apr - $61.02
May - $102.96
It's already made $18.73 from June 1 - June 4.
(PM for proof of income)
This site is very well indexed. Google just started crawling in May and it's already doing well in google. It has been doing well in the other engines for a while.
* Don't pay attentoin to june's page views or bandwidth. A spider tried to download my entire site and sucked down 5 gigs of bandwidth in 24 hours. We've already blocked it with .htaccess rules.
Excellent rankings for a lot of keywords:
And many more. A lot of people have been trained by google to use "Define keyword" and I optimized the site that way. Works quite well.
The site is powered by a GPL'd script that I modified + a mysql database of words to created pages on the fly. The site is about 8 files. Requires php, mysql and apache (htaccess for the search engine friendly urls)
The site is growing daily, especially now that it's in Google. Revenue is currently from Google Adsense and could easily do $40-$50 more each month with some banner ads from Fastclick, Casale etc. I just haven't had time to try it.
I will keep the links on all *my* sites that link to it for 6 months. The rest are link exchanges I've worked out or links people bought. I did not include that revenue as it was network wide for the most part. It would be nice if you kept the links up in the footer until the end of June (you can remove all the links to my sites though).
The site currently has no PR because it was sandboxed. Almost all my other sites are PR 6 when I add them to my network. Next time PR updates this would should probably be a 5 or 6 as well, but obviously I can't guarantee that.
A couple of questions have come in and I thought I would post the answers here as well.
Q. Where does the traffic come from.
A. Search Engines! 99.999% of the traffic is from search engines. The site is well indexed and the traffic comes from people trying to look up words. The site ranks well for quite a few words and has a lot of words indexed.
Q. How big is the site?
A. Around 10 megs total.
Q. Where does the content come from?
A. I found a word list of about and 193,000 words that I put into a mysql table. It's just a list of words used to create the pages for each word. The pages are created dynamically. The definions come from the unix/linux dict protocol which uses the dict.org database. It has several dictionaries and provides definitions from every one that the word appears in.
Q. Can I add more words?
A. Yes. The 193,000 words in the site already are just a primer for search engines. The search function will find defintitions from any word in the dict.org databases, which should be almost every word in any dictionary you could find.
Thanks for the interest. Any more questions, just ask!
