Tell me the type of host/service I need

Hey all...
I have an online store, I am sick and tired of my webhost. I do not know enough about hosting, but know a little bit. My current host whose name begins with an I and ends in A has pulled too many lame pranks.
The other day they cut my site off because I went to 8.25gb of bandwidth...so I looked on their site plans and it said the LOWEST plan is 15gb of transfer-when contacted he said, "you are on our lowest plan which is 8gb" I sent a copy of the screenshot showing 15gb-he said "oh, we have changed the plans since you signed up".

My main beef was they have a forum on the same server that overloads the servers and server load goes through the roof a couple times a month-I have tried to be calm, offer more money for better service, tried to work it out, but they have become increasingly rude, unapologetic and unwilling to support loyal customers.

SO, what do I need to look for in a host. (Oh, I am in the USA they are in Australia and do not want another foreign webhost) as I said, I have an online store, I use a mysql db for my store, I am using their cpanel....uhhh, I would like 15gb of transfer....dont know what else, I am new to this stuff so excuse the lame post...I just know how to sell stuff on my site ;-)

Do I need to look for a ecommerce specialist host? or does it matter?

I have a comodo SSL, I imagine its going to be a pain to transfer over my store, but I cant take these clowns anymore.

sticksandstones,

Truly no need for an 'ecommerce' specialist type host - although they may be able to provide you with a merchant account, but I assume you already have one.

It shouldn't be too much of a problem moving your SSL, content, databases, etc. - in fact the transfer should be reasonably simple and any good host will transfer it on your behalf and most likely free of charge.

Yeah, I have my own merchant account and gateway (Auth.net) and my comodo SSL.
I pay a pretty low rate now with the 'other' host (10 bucks a month) but will gladly pay more for better service and the ability to not have my DB tied up from some forums?
I have a dedicated IP with the other host, so I need that too I think?

Sorry to hear about your problem. Alot of people seem to have a problem just like you do.

To be honest it depends on what control panel you have when transferring your account.

But for example, Sometimes if you move from cpanel to directadmin then it isnt a problem.

You would need a dedicated ip for a SSL certificate. If you look around, you will find many web hosts that will be able to accommodate your needs.

Transfering your sites should not be a problem. If you depend on your host to do it, make sure you contact them about it before signing up.

Best of luck!

I've been very impressed with Site5 since I signed up. Their lowest plan may have a bit more features than you want, but it's only $10 a month. Site5 just released my.Site5 and NetAdmin 4 also. So it would be a good beginning experience. Also, their support is fantastic! http://www.site5.com

So for sure I will need the Dedicated IP to run my store....then all other things are just personal (the email accounts, bandwidth transfer, storage, etc?)

I guess so stiksandstones. What i would recommend you do is to look for a reliable host first. Then consult with them about the transfer.

sticksandstones,

Yes - a dedicated IP address would be required but hosts should provide them free of charge along with a reason (i.e. SSL for e-commerce site).

Search around there are quite a few good hosts available for affordable rates.

It seems a dedicated 'server' or colocated hosting would be overkill for my small store?

If you're crashing the server with a forum already i'd be worried about recommending shared hosting to you, however for a small store I think shared hosting would suit you perfectly and I see no reason why you should waste money on a completely dedicated server.

I agree totally with Laws. With the amount of bandwidth you say you use... I don't see any problems!!

It's not his forum crashing the server, it's another users forum on the same server.
