    UK Game Server Help

    hey
i have a large clan in the game counterstrike: source and we were wondering about looking into getting a dedicated server, problem we have is that none of us no jack about how to setup, run or even get a dedicated server, we've just stuck to those rip of priced monthly rentals

what i would like to no:
    1. how do we go about buying a server and getting it up and ready to use
    2. what setups are needed to run the game
    3. whats all this going to cost us (we live in the uk everything is high priced)
    4. how do we managed it

were not looking to sell on the server to others this is purely to run 3-4 smaller games for us

    Thanks

    what'd i miss?

ps high prices in the uk is a common misconception - have a shop around for a dedicated server im sure you'll find something that'll fit your needs quite happily

I've got an ordinary CS: Source server with Game2XS, and their support and service is excellent, especially since they switched networks back in April.

ok so ive been looking, someone sugested a VPS which is setup and we can use it but man it lags, so once we get cash back we'll be looking for a dedi again

    http://order.1and1.co.uk/xml/order/S...op&__lf=Static
    Middle On

this is what we have found so far, can only one suggest someone better. or no any problems with 1and1

Don't touch 1&1 if you value your sanity - support is absolutely sh*te. Even phone support doesn't necessarily know what a website is, let alone admin a server.

If you want a recommendation, try asking at www.clook.net for a managed dedi. If not them, it may be worth asking at www.amard.com

Both are pretty decent companies offering managed servers for a decent price. You'll not match the US prices on UK soil, though - not on anything worth doing anything with.

are you only looking for UK offers, if you are also interested in EU offers (like in the Netherlands) I can help you

For the UK: I had a dedicated box from digitalservers.org ... the biggest issue with your own gameserver is the bandwidth I think.

Can you tell me what games you want to run on it and what you pay now?

I believe digitalservers.org rents their machines from coreix.com if I'm not mistaken. You might have better luck going to the source..

we had an NL server before it lagged alot once we got alot of players on our servers

so far i have been quoted
    P4 2.8GHz 800FSB HT
    1,024 MB DDR RAM
    80GB HDD
    330GB Bandwidth

    for £69 + VAT
    and setup costs per usual

i dont need a managed server, is another thing i have some good friends in the gameserver selling business in the US that are helping me learn and helping set everything up

Why does it have to be in the UK.
People in the gaming community seem obsessed by ping.
Personally, i notice no difference in playing on a server with 10ms ping and one with 150ms ping. I'm in the UK too.
A high ping (over 200ms-250ms) indicates network traffic.

To be honest it sounds to me like you do need a managed server from your original post. If your planning you using a linux server (which will be the cheapest option) then there is quite a gap between being able to setup a game server and being able to secure your box.

Any providers out of the London or manchester data centres should be able to provide you something that will meet these needs with a ping of approximatly 30-50ms for UK DSL connections. I'd reccomend trying Corenix or Poundhost if you really are looking for unmanged.

I think you also need to look at your bandwidth needs, how many servers (and what games) do you want to run on this box and therefore how much bandwidth do you need, there are several posts about calculating this around have a search.

    Cheers

If you're looking for fully managed it's going to be expensive, what kind of money have you got to spend?

Yes, but i've had that on servers in the UK with a high ping.
Ping is not an idication of speed at all.
Servers with a ping higher than it should be (i.e a server in the UK from a UK with a ping above 100ms) is not right.
As long as the network is not congested, ping makes no difference.

Sorry X-Gaming you are mistaken, Digitalservers build all there own servers to our own gaming based specifications. We couldn't supply 3700 64 bit servers with 2Gb RAM for £105 p/m if we had to rent.

If you are not so worried about having a fully managed server you may want to take a look at poundhost. I have dealt with them a few times before and personally have machines co-located with them. They have a specialist range of machines especially for running game servers that come with unmetered bandwidth. However if you are looking for a managed machine then poundhost probably is not your best solution.
