Exclamation What is SSH and what can people do once they have access to it?

Now before you start sending me everywhere and deleting this topic... Please read...

Ok... I'm pretty new to this whole webhosting service and I have no Idea what SSH is and what it is used for.

I was trying to strike a deal with a couple of good Flash Programmers and Graphic Artist's when they asked me to have access through SSH... What does it stand for and what can a person do once they have access to it?

Can it turn my site into a malfunctioning site? Or is it a sort of FTP?

I'd really like to know because I don't want to activate it without knowing its power over my web hosting service...

Now if this question has been asked and answered before... Please submit a link to the thread so I may read it....

    Many Thanks,

SSH is Secure Shell, a protocol used to access a command line interface on linux/unix. What can be done with it depends on the groups/rights the user accessing it has. Basically, it provides a console that is the same as sitting down at a linux/unix machine.

This is just a basic explanation, a more in depth explanation can be found at:

    http://linux.about.com/od/commands/l/blcmdl1_ssh.htm

or a better one could probably be found with a quick google search as well.

    Hope this helps.

Why does a graphic artist and a flash programmer need shell access?

I was thinking the same thing. There is no reason for them to have shell access. Everything they need to do can be done through FTP just as easy.
