We're big fans of Gallery here. It works well for most needs and seems simple enough for everyone to use.

i had used coppermine before. It is very nice with the features mentioned by HOST78

PLUS: batch images: you can fpt entire albums, and it will allow you to generate thumbnail from admin control panel.

I've used Gallery on a couple personal sites and it's very easy to use and customize. It had all the features I was looking for, so it was a good choice for me.

From a standpoint of simplicity, I've always been quick to recommend Snaps! to people looking for a single-user gallery that's fast, easy to integrate/skin and very efficiently written. I've found it takes little effort to customize code within the application too.
