    UltraMonkey is a good Linux software load balancer.

    OpenSSI is a good method for building a cluster with virtual IPs.

    Hardware load balancer is the commonly used and most effective method to implement load balancing. Nortel Alteon switch and Cisco load balancer are the popular Hardware load balancers.

    Hardware load balancers can provide session persistence and request level failover. The session of a user can be maintained, forwarding all requests of a user to the same server using the hardware load balancer.
