Question about payment gateways and merchant accounts
Hello, WHT has answered a lot of my questions but one question that has had me confused for some time is what type of merchant account and payment gateway do i need?
I was looking at the promotion for CDG commerce with the authorize.net payment gateway, i would not mind spending the extra money to deal with fewer problems but i have also looked at the 2 checkout payment gateway. If i went with 2 checkout would i still need a CDG commerce or other merchant account to go with it?
If you went with 2checkout then you would be using a 3rd party processor. This means that you would be using 2co's merchant account to take payments. (if you want to see how this can go wrong do a search here for Paysystems).
If you go with CDG or Authorize.net you will have a full merchant account (your own) and in the end it is safer for you. They only act as a payment gateway accepting payments for your merchant account.
It's worth the investment to go full merchant account. I wish we started that way but we went the 2co -> paysystems -> full merchant way and we are still updating payments for clients because of the paysystems melt down.
2 checkout is a 3rd party merchant account, so you only use their merchant account, you canot use batch payments with it, it is basically like a PayPal account, but you canot send money from one acount to another.
CDG offers "real" merchant accounts, if you you are from the US, it is the better option.
