    colo in manhattan

I am researching setting up a one rack data center for a small business I am setting up. We will *not* be web-hosting, but will be using the data ctr as a hub for our business network. We will have about 5 or 6 servers + a disk array that we would like to colocate in a manhattan data center. 1 Mb of bandwidth will be more than sufficient for internet access. In a few months we will want 2 direct t1 or ds3 connections brought in, so cross connect costs are relevant. We will need one static ip address, and prefer that it is not from a ctr that may have a lot of blocked ip addresses, bc we will be accessing through monitored networks. Initially, we do not want to make more than a one year commitment. A center that offers reasonable back-up support for the servers (I understand this will be extra), would be desirable for when we cannot get to the building to reboot the servers, etc.

I know that this is a sub group of a web-hosting forum, but you seem to be the most active colocation forum I can find. Colocation.com seems like an easy solution, but I've read that staying off the level3 network is important bc of all the bad ip addresses they host. It seems like telx and telehouse are probably the most mentioned others that I have found online. Any direction/thoughts/experience would be much appreciated.

You may want to look into getting a rack at Telehouse 25 Broadway. It is the home of the NYIIX and the NYCX, and it's one of the most well-connected facilities in the world. Cross-connects are a one-time fee.

You might also want to look at NYC Connect @ 111 8th Ave:

    Or TelX at 60 Hudson:

Equinix at 111 8th Ave is actually NYC Connect. I could be incorrect, but i'm pretty sure that Equinix only sells space there in conjunction with one of their rack and peering port packages.

If you're looking at 111 8th Ave you should check with FortressITX.

I don't see why not. Most providers will have no problem selling 1Mbps, or even down to increments as low as 64Kbps. You'll just pay a heck of a lot more per Mbps at low commits.
