    * Yet another dummy question

    When you register a domain and the registrars asks you about the dns of your hosting company, do you have to do anything else about nameservers?
    I have just registered the domain for my Dad's company in Godaddy and during the sign up they ask for the nameservers. I have provided the ones my hosting company gave to me.

    Is anything else necessary? Or is the domain already "ready" to use them in my hosting account?

    Hi,

    Depending upon your registrar it may take upto 24-72 hrs for changes to take effect.

    Also provided your host has everything ready to go... but usually that's all set.

    Just start going to your website in 6-12 hours and see if it brings anything up.

    I've had domains propogate in 15 minutes after registration... but we only deal with enom, and this was a .com. Your TLD will also effect how quickly it starts working.

    co.uk's take forever, but they're not a realtime tld... ugh. I had a client going nuts as it did take about 30 hours to propogate.

    Yes you only need to do one thing....LOCK THE DOMAIN

    Inside your GoDaddy account screen, click on Set Locking, and make sure you lock the domain there. That way it can't be stolen or transferred without your knowledge.

    That's my speech for today. I've seen too many people get caught unlocked and its not pretty or fun.

    As long as the DNS matches your server's entries, it's all done

    What's really fun is when you get one of those really long domains, and you switch an l (lowercase L) with an I (upper case i) in the name somewhere (or a similar sort of swap), and do it one way with the host and one way with the domain... that'll cross your eyes for a few hours.

    I've found that DNS changes at GoDaddy are almost instantaneous. When your domain is bought is locked automatically. You can always change the nameserver information later but you have to unlock the domains first, change the nameservers, and then lock them again.
