just found this forum and i have to say its a great source of information. In the past few days Ive been reading about the legalities of starting a business and lots of the information is confusing. Here is my situation:
Im a college student who wants to start selling a home-made product online. I plan on setting up a website to sell this product from my location in Illinois (not on a campus). Now the website, I want it to look professional so I will be using a fictitious company name and a P.O.Box as the address. I will setup a simple paypal business account to take care of online payments. Im assuming I will need to file for a DBA and business license. The part tha confuses me is, hwo do I handle sales tax? I have never filed my own taxes before so this is all new to me. I know I will ahve to report income, but will I need soem sort of license to sell the product? If it makes any difference, the product is a home-made face cream. Any help would be appreciated.
you will need to register with your state and county for sales tax. When you apply for your DBA you can ask them all the details there. They will be asking you if you will need to do this and you will have to pay an extra fine.
I would contact your local SBA for more information though.
