What would you do if you got drafted?
I was speaking with some friends today about the aggressive tactics of military recruiters in the usa. I have heard new tactics Include taking anyone, people with drug problems, no high school diploma and mental institution patients.
They offered one friend a $15,000 sign on bonus if he signed up for 6 years.
It seems the military is having a real problem recruiting people and may eventually move towards a draft. Maybe it is unlikely to happen, but what would you do if you were drafted to fight a war in Iran or Syria the neo-cons next target? 18 to 35 draft for instance.
Just an exercise in the hypothetical.

As far as I know the Army is the only branch that allows people recruits without a hs diploma to enlist. They all offer signon bonuses. I was offered 9000.00 in the USCG which really didnt make sense to me because the Army was offering far more and a bigger GI bill yet the enlistees were less likely to use the GI bill.
Slapping isnt going to get you kicked out, you'll just get your *** beat, then captains masked, then phased, or even court marshalled which would result in jail time.
I really liked the Coast Guards approach however. They didnt offer to take me to lunch or drive me to the gym. My recruiter explained that this was something I needed to follow through on and it was my responsibility to provide him the information and be on time for my asvab and meps evaluation. He didnt harress me, he was straight up with me and unlike many i didn't get screwed.
Its funny, when I arrived at the national guard base to take my test everyone else arrived in vans with their recruiters. A marine recruiter came up to me and asked what branch i was with. I told him and he mocked me by pretending to type on a computer. I then explained to him that i like computers and that the richest man in the world just so happens to own a computer software company. I talked to alot of the other guys that day and they had other reasons for going, most of them involving no where else to go, pregnant girl friend or money problems. It made me feel good that I wasn't being forced or persuaded to do something because of my situation. The recruiters I met with before were all bad car sales men, They'd sell their soul to the devil....
I really dont have to worry about a draft because if it was to happen I already have prior military service and would be the first to go considering my age. However I would be realigned with the coast guard which I think is a pretty good position to be in. You dont hear about the coast guard invading Iraq...

I'm not physically fit to join the military, but if I were to be drafted i'd probably have to leave because I really haven't hit anybody much less fire a weapon at them.

Now, you say you aren't physically fit, so all this bragging of yours about being so tough is all a farce huh?

I'd do my best for my country, however, I doubt I'd pass the physical due to old injuries and flat feet.

I would suggest that everyone serve. For me - I had a blast, met a lot of great friends that I would trust with my life.
Once I got out and started running a call center, I never saw so many people calling out sick for just the smallest thing. The US Air Force taught me a few things that I have always appreciated.

I live in Canada and I have asthma so there would be no way I would be drafted (even if the draft was in Canada) but I would help out with building bombs etc in Canada.

I would do whatever they needed if I got drafted. It's not like you can say NO.
I've always thought it would be a great idea to have a new branch of the Military. This branch would consist of non-violent criminals who are serving shorter sentances (i.e under 6-7 years). The same age rules would apply, i.e no one over 25 (OR whatever it is now). Obviously there would have to be alot of rules etc on who is accepted.
This would help the over-crowding prison system.
This would help bolster our military numbers.
This would also help develop these troubled individuals better. They could learn career building skills, learn discipline, respect etc etc
The system would have to be strict, with alot of variables.

Quite an idea but I doubt it would ever happen. Too many of them would find a way to run away.

They'd probably toss me out for physical disability. Heart/vascular disorder which causes unstable blood preassure, and medication only takes the edge off it.

Depends on which branch of military you want to join I guess, but if you have no high school diploma you must at least a GED and have some college education (a year I believe) in order to get into the military. I seriously doubt that they would take druggies if they haven't been sober for a while. I'm not really concerned about a draft at all. The $15,000 sign on bonus is standard practice for military. you don't get it till you do your four years. It's weird that your friend would've got offered a $15K sign on bonus for a 6 year term, they usually do it automatically for 4.
P.S. I'm not worried at all since I'm already joining the Navy. For those of you, if there is a draft who don't support your country, you're really, really pathetic.Last edited by varg; 05-19-2005 at 12:27 PM.

I really can't say point blank that I'd absolutely find any way *not* to fight in a given war if I were to be drafted, as I think it totally depends upon the purpose and reasoning of the war. For instance, I actually might have seriously considered fighting in WWII, simply due to the fact that I would have abhorred Hitler, his regime, and his practices. However, I probably *would* dodge the draft it were the Iraqi war I was being drafted for.

I can tell you since my son has only been in the Marines for 2 years that they will not accept anyone without a HS Diploma (I think the Navy is the same way) and no major traffic tickets and he drug tested at MEPS (no signing bonus with a 82 on the ASVAB). And I would bet my paycheck he darn sure would not have wanted druggies with him when he did his tour in Fallujah, Iraq. If you have ever had a chance to talk with a Military Investigator when people try to get higher security clearences I promise drugs are a major issue. I may be mistaken but I think the Army will take a GED. As for the college part, after a certain number of hours of college your elligble for a HS diploma even if you took the GED.
Besides to answer the original part of the thread, I would serve with honor and pride :-)
