I'm just wondering if the yahoo.com domain deal too good to be true? Has anyone bought a new domain from them? How was your experience?
Searches didn't turn up anything solid. Although there was an issue about how Yahoo put an advertising bar at the bottom if using their standard redirecting thingy. Hmm... Could this be solved by buying my first year at yahoo.com, and then transfer is elsewhere?
Part of the catch is that the cost of renewal will not be $4.98 and is likely to be a little higher than some good, competing registrars. Customer service from Yahoo is poor. The registry is actually outsourced to MelbourneIT. To have control over your account it is best to get your MelbourneIT registry key. Getting Yahoo's cooperation on that maybe sometimes works, but sometimes it can be a struggle.

You can transfer and should transfer, and ultimately Yahoo/MelbourneIT must allow it. According to the posts of others the time and effort required to get that to happen seems to vary. In my own past experience I was able to transfer easily after getting past some problems that were partially the product of my own inexperience (pulling the plug on the Yahoo hosting destroying my whois-listed email address) and Yahoo's poor support in resolving that problem.
