Add SimpleMachines.org to your list and then do a search. It's been discussed dozens of times before.

If SMF (simplemachines.org) was on your list, that'd be my top vote, but then again, I am extremely biased towards it, lol.
Out of the four that you list, vBulletin is the most widely known system around. There's a strong programming and hack community for it. Beyond that, I don't see what the fuss about them is... I'll stick with SMF when possible.Doug Hazard - "retired" Web Hosting Master

vBulletin is good but on shared environments is a bit resource heavy. If it was me, SMF all the way. I love it.

I don't see it mentioned often--but if you're looking for a simple/fast/free forum with no extra bells and whistles you should look at PunBB.
I've tried phpBB, IPB and vBulletin--and PunBB was the one that was most attractive to me.* Best Web Hosting - Submit your host to our directory and become one of our top 10 web hosts.0

From your list I’d have to say vBulletin and phpBB all the way.
The advantages about vBulletin are that it’s well known, stable and secure, and is full of features; while the advantages about phpBB are that it’s also well known, it’s also stable and more or less secure, and it’s very simple and easy to use and doesn’t have superfluous features.0

I prefer punBB. Free, open source and much more stable/secure than phpBB and easily skinned. There has been literally dozens of threads on this subject though, and if you'll do a search, you'll find the same info over and over again
Really, it comes down to what you need and whether or not you're ready for a paid solution yet.0

I, honestly, like vB for all my project now. The permissions system is straight forward. I can add a permission within about 5 minutes. Same thing with many of the other features.
I would say go with vB if you are going to be deriving any $$ from this site.Dan Sheppard ~ Freelance whatever0

Wow! Didn't know that existed... Nice to have the mods pre-installed since it can be a pain to put them in...
