I had a friend today who has had a site with ****** for 2 years now.
He has had issues on and off the whole time, but all he had was his personal email addresses on that account, so he didnt really care.
But in April he started noticing problems, he wasent getting any email, but he just started using another domain of his that I host on my private box.
Today he asked me if I can get the old domain working at ****** as he has paid for another year of service (its cheap so he didnt care about the cost).
He gave me his details, and I logged in to ****** control center to see if i could find the error, I couldnt.
So I started a live chat, after 92 minutes of leaving the live chat in the backround while I did some work, finaly a message pops up
"Thanks for contacting us, my name is herb, How can I help?"
I explained everything, he said it had to be a billing issue, as I was about to end the chat I saw a link, "Server Status" so i clicked it, and it said;
"April 21, 2005 9:55 am
A failure on a storage server has caused their file systems into read-only mode. This means that the websites will continue to operate normally, but customers will not be able to receive email or edit the content of their website.
These issues will be resolved within 3 hours of this message. "
I explained this was the exact problem we were still having (and it was way past 3 hours, about 20 days late..) and could he look into it, he said no, he dosent help if we dont pay the bill. Well after 5 mins of looking at the 30 some odd emails my friend sent me about the hosting account I find the receipt for the $64.00 1 year of hosting, that re-started on Jan. 8th 2005, and it was paid, so I sent the Reciept # to him in the chat, and he said, that yes it was paid, but it still was a billing issue, and he couldnt help, when I asked how much was owed he said (im not kidding) $0.00 and that I must first call the billing dept. M-F 7am -5:30pm PST and pay the $0.00. I tried to explain that was tupid: as that is the same as NO MONEY (I think the guy was from overseas doing support, as he assured me $0.00 is alot of money to have overdue on an account.
Well at this point I got tired, closed the chat and moved the DNS of the account over to my private server, as this was just tooo much (but funny)
And so you know im not lieing I hae attached the Server Status page.
Are you sure he said $0.00 is a lot of money to have overdue?

I think anyone would definitely agree with you on this one. That is probably the _dumbest_ thing I/we have ever heard on this planet.
Hopefully your friend is able to get them to see 0 as in nothing (not sure why anyone would think 0 is anything but a null value).
Thanks for the good laugh though on this and hopefully the issue will get resolved and someone there will wake up and grow a brain possibly.
Yeah, I started choking on my gum when I read the response, and we talked about how my friend owed $0.00 and I asked how much it was he said that $0.00 is a billing issue and that it was a large amount of money he owed.
All I can say is its funny and its most likely in your best interest to stay away from them. (just a thought...)
he said that $0.00 is a billing issue and that it was a large amount of money he owed.
Yes, well I can definitely say if I had someone from a company support tell me how much 0 was a _huge_ deficit I would be spitting up whatever i was drinking or choking on whatever eating at the time. (Guess not a good idea to be injesting food or drink while speaking to sales departments eh?)
In any case hopefully they do sort out your friend's account properly and also give some kind of credit too for their lack thereof on the end of brain cells.
THAT was a really funny story... if you can see the humour in it
$0.00 has to be paid.... !! *LOL*
Yeah, really the Dumbest Thing I EVER heard from a web host... sure beats sending fake "support replies", as some other company recently did!
Well, I am not totally surprised, though, noticing the host name.
I'm always amazed at the lack of critical thinking skills some "techs" have. It is suprisingly difficult to hire technically proficient people that can think outside the box.
Between 1996-1999, I oversaw a contract where we were billed about $80-$100 and hour for computer techs who would go to sites and install a messaging system that consisted of Microsoft Exchange, an X.500 directory system, and a network management system. The guys the company hired had to have a very basic script that consisted of:
1. insert CD
2. type "xyz"
3. remove CD
If anything happened that was "outside the script" they basically would start everything from scratch.
People that could actually think for themselves - no that was really expensive - about $130/hr.
This was a government contract mind you but still you would be amazed. Most tech support reads scripts and can do little more.
