Proper way to format a HD?
anyone have the list of commands to properly format a secondary drive and have all space under 1 partition. I know there is like 5 or more commands that must be typed to do this... any have the steps
First you need to create the partition. Use fdisk for that. You must know what device it is . So for example if it is an ide, it's typically /dev/hdc for the secondary drive. To be sure you can:
Once in, you can create a partition and use all the space possible. Save the partition and exit.
mkfs -t ext3 /dev/hdc1
to initialise and format the new harddisk
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/hda3 110309896 7242172 97373888 7% /
/dev/hda1 155545 36111 111404 25% /boot
none 1027484 0 1027484 0% /dev/shm
/dev/hdb1 497829 8246 463881 2% /old
/dev/hdb3 is not shown... the total drive space on disk2 is 120gig i want the full space to be available under one partition.
follow my steps:
mkfs -t ext3 /dev/hdb1
[email protected] [~]# mkfs -t ext3 /dev/hdb1
mke2fs 1.32 (09-Nov-2002)
mkfs.ext3: Device size reported to be zero. Invalid partition specified, or
partition table wasn't reread after running fdisk, due to
a modified partition being busy and in use. You may need to reboot
to re-read your partition table.
how do i know if this will work? last time i saw this message i rebooted and my server never came back online.
during the fdisk process did you create a partition using all the sectors?
Oh yes, since this is a disk with existing partitions, you need to delete the existing partitions first before creating one with all the available space.
no, i just selected delete partition the w to save. hmm i need all the commands. there was a post that listed everything to type but i can't find it anymore
oh well i'll keep searching
