Hello, I am planning to host a pretty massive website (in my opinion). The website is coded around the database (phpBB). The database has 50,000 registered users and can have anywhere from 50-1000 people online at once. The website is www.complexityclan.com
Can anyone give any suggestions on what kind of a setup would maximize the performance of this website?
Hey coL. We host our website www.TeamParadigmShift.com with Colo4dallas.com. Our forums aren't very active but our website gets bombed with traffic, especially downloads section with demos/etc. It's especially bad when we run tournaments/contests with one of our sponsors.
It's on there 2.8 HT GHZ P4 server running linux and Direct admin. Which works well for what we need right now.
I've been to complexity's site a couple times, along with some other pro CS teams sites(3D, NoA), you guys get a crazy amount of traffic flow. So I would probably plan into the future as much as possible.
I think you would be best suited with a beefy Dual Opteron machine. It may be viable to have two seperate machines one for web content and the other for mySQL/Databases.
Dual Opterons (AMD). Much better for heavy databasing and essentially overall. Another option would be to run two servers, one for web content, one database. You could use two mid-range servers (i.e two 2.8 GHZ P4's) etc.
Most companies offer Dual Opteron setups(Gnax comes to mind). For a dual machine setup you would probably have to contact the companies to see if they offer such a service.
