Hi,

We've been unable to reach our servers at servermatrix DLLSTX2 facility for an hour or so ( 5 servers ).

IS anyone else having problems ?

Based on the responses during their last outage, I'd tend to think that this one may be isolated to you directly. Have you tried to call them, or open a ticket up to see what the problem may be?

Yup, Servers are not even pingable from inside SM network - looks like they've been pulled for some reason.

Have you tried calling them? Perhaps you should if you can't afford this downtime.

..ping the servers.... traceroute, scan for services..... open a ticket..... call them? <-- sad, i've been on WHT to long.. i'm becomming a cynical nut

In my experience, whenever I've had a server stop responding to pings, I ping some IPs below and above my IP range. If some respond, it's most likely my server and not a general problem. Then I remote desktop in, and if I can't do that, I'll get it rebooted.

Having said that, I've only ever had a server become unpingable twice in 17 months, so I'm not really speaking from much experience

Bit of a false alarm but also a huge pain.

3 of the servers sit behind a switch that we rent for them and it was this switch that was the problem - because both of our DNS servers are behind the switch that's why all 5 servers disappeared ( at least via dns names ) and not just the 3.

Took them an age to find and fix the problem though and had nearly 400 customers sites off the air for 6 hours !!!

Turns out someone deleted the vlan setup for the servers behind the switch (probably sales / billing ) so we had 400 customers hopping up and down for 6 hours because some idiot stopped the wrong servers.

The *major* annoyance was that once they figured it was the switch they didn't know the username / pass to log into it to fix it (!)

I've been pretty happy with SM over the past few years but things really are on the slide, we have 12 servers their now but I don't think we'll be adding any more.

We're launching a new niche hosting company soon and will be looking elsewhere for the servers :-/

Good to hear you got it fixed. Just goes to show that a setup is only as strong as the weakest point.
