cpanel backup load question...

I'm having problems with cpanel causing excessive load during backups. Sometimes the server even crashes. I am currently using FTP backups to a remote server, I am wondering if using incremental backups to a spare drive would solve this. Does the incremental backup use less load and backup mysql databases successfully?

The problem maybe a >7gig mysql database, does anyone else have a database this size and a good method of backing it up without causing high loads?

You should try to run OPTIOMIZE TABLE at first, but during this command running server will be not accessable.
At the second I should recommend to install slave MySQL server on the another machine and configure mysql database replication.
You need not backup anymore. It is the best solution for big mysql databases
