Been looking into the hosting biz for about 2 years now. Tried the good old cheap way of trying to make a buisness and it never worked. Soon learned from my mistakes, and this time i am planning nearly everything i can think of. Some tips would be good too if possible
Over the last month or so i have put a lot of planning into it. I have managed one or two dedicated servers when i had a few game servers that i was hosting, so i am quite ok with linux plus i have a spare computer to install linux on and have a mess around with it a bit more over the next few months.
I was just wondering which would i be best off starting with? A reseller account or VPS?
Please also recommend some good places to go to as well.
Reseller then a managed dedicated server. VPS isn't quite worth it for what you want to do.
If you have a reseller there's no management to worry about, and once you can afford it, move to a completely managed server. If you'll take my word, managing a dedicated server with clients by yourself [with limited experience] is a bitch.
reseller account all the way. VPS in my honest opinion is not worth it and for a few extra coin a month you can get a dedicated server. Reseller accounts are cool b/c they are managed and if you grow above a certain amount of user accounts you just move to a dedicated server. I run a VPS program for a large company and do not even offer on my own site since i am not impressed. I have had a reseller account for my own business as well as run them for my own company and they are just simple.
I'm on a VPS right now and I understand where people are coming from with the whole "less resources" thing, but it certainly depends on your client base and the sites. I have not had the need for greater performance, so I haven't had a problem with the VPS at all.
No matter what happens, if you start with a reseller and end up at a dedicated next, more power to you. That would be a good route to take if you have had management experience already. Good luck!
