Doesn't every site have their own IP address which the domain name forwards to?
Some servers offer around 10 IP addresses and some offer more/less. Then I read somewhere that you don't need a different IP number for every customer. I'm a little confused. Anyone care to enlighten me?
Not only that, but you can only have so many IPs on a server, I think it is 32? So hosts would be really limited in how many customers could be on one server.
Generally you start out with around 4 IPs on a server. You dedicate one as the shared IP address, and can do whatever you need to with the others, such as use them for nameservers, or have a dedicated IP address for one site. As HP-David said, if you want an SSL certificate, you need to be on a dedicated IP address.
For instance our customers are on 18.104.22.168, my site is on 22.214.171.124, and the nameservers are on 126.96.36.199 and 188.8.131.52.
John is correct. Some data centers don't like to give out too many IPs though as they can be used for spam and get the whole net block blacklisted. But, you can have 256 IPs and possibly more per server.

as John and elix said, having 255 ips or more on a particular server is possible.
We have some servers with /24 blocks on them (255 ips, 253 usable).
