I have been searching for quite some time for a reliable, competitive hosting provider who are based in Australia. Is anyone aware of such hosting companies, who acually own their servers, and are not simple reselling companies.

Theirs hundreds if not thousands of Australian hosts either with servers in Australia or abroad. Maybe if you listed what your chasing in terms of features someone can narrow it down some choices for you
As a satisfied Aussie Hosts client, I second the recommendation. Aussie Hosts own their servers and maintain them well. I also appreciate their fast support and how Gary and Marita run their business. So do a lot of other people -- they're the Number 1 Top Buy in Web Hosting Australian PC User Magazine.
If you don't see exactly what you want in their hosting packages, they also offer custom packages.

I've worked with Largenets and still have a client hosted with them (although AFAIK, their hosting is now being moved to Ewing IT). Shaun is a great guy and is able to keep his servers up and running smoothly. Good luck!

Not sure about thousands of Australian hosts, but I did get up to number 136 in building my list of australian hosts. The percentage of them that own their own servers (as was the thread starters criteria) would be significantly less, but it's sometimes hard to tell.
There's a lot of reseller hosts, and then those leasing ded servers, then those leasing cabinet space and provisioning their own servers, and then those who own/lease their own facility with staff in the dc and noc.
The largest that own their own servers (etc) would probably be webcentral.com.au, but IMO their pricing is a tad extreme, to say the least. You've also got Ozhosting.com.au. They're owned by the aussie publicly listed company (DES) Destra. Their pricing is pretty much the same as webcentral, and extreme by WHT standards.
At the moment, it seems that Dotable.com appears to be the best Australian soultion for webhosting so far. Has anyone heared of any problems with Dotable.com, or do you know of any other hosting providers?

There are hundreds of solid, dependable and quality Australian based providers. We're currently using www.quadrahosting.com for our off-network status/support sites, and have worked with www.myacen.com.au in the past. You would certainly do well with either of those.
