i'm building a website with adult content, sort of along the lines of Adult Friend Finder. i know some hosting companies dont allow adult content. since this is the first time i've ever done anything with "adult content" - i really dont know anything about it.
any suggestions on finding hosting for my client? things i need to keep in mind when deciding whats the best deal for the dollar? is finding an adult hosting deal for $100/year or less reasonable? and when investigating adult hosting deals, is there anything i should REALLY avoid?
hmm... thats part of the problem.. i'm not sure what all i'll need in terms of bandwidth.. i'm guessing that adult content sites "can" generate A LOT of traffic!
a few things i do know i'd like: php
and at some point, this client may be lookng to do some ecomerce. i dont know much of anything about ecommerce now, so a host that will let us move into that with some ease would be nice.
the target audience for the site is "more" regionally based (around a large US city). but as i said, i'm under the impression adult content sites "can" generate LARGE amounts of traffic. so, i'm not sure how much bandwidth to be looking for. along that line of thinking, i guess also a host with good tools for tracking bandwidth.
does that help? heh heh.. thats kinda why i'm here.. i dont know exactly what i'm looking for either!!
Most hosts that specialize in adult hosting have what you're looking for.
Regarding bandwidth, I wouldn't worry too much about that to start with. It likely will take time (read advertising/marketing) before your client is burning a lot of bandwidth. Most adult oriented hosts offer flexible plans and month-to-month hosting so upgrading your bandwidth over time shouldn't be an issue.
thanks for your replies so far..
i'm starting to have hard time with information overload, while trying to narrow my choices down. a lot of the threads i see just say to "search the forums".. man.. while it's quite likely i'm not as able-minded as some.. boy.. i'll tell you i've been lookng around for a couple hours now, and there's just SO MUCH INFO. narrowing things down is tough!!
I have a suggestion here ... If you decide to go with a Host, Try to pay monthly instead of Yearly. So after a month or 2 if you find the hosting not upto the mark, you can always shift & you won't have to ask the Host to give you a Refund for the Rest of the months ( If they offer a Refund ) & do read the TOS of the Host carefully before Signing up.
This is the best advice given thus far Golgo. Following these instructions you will avoid many pitfalls eg: a huge bandwidth overage bill. Personally we think it is wrong to let a customer exceed their alloted bandwidth without their knowledge and/or explicit written consent. We think it is better to give them notice when they reach 80% and return a bandwidth exceeded error when the same has been exhausted. Nevertheless let me dispell some fears regarding adult sites and/or hosting as this is what we publish and specialize in:
Not all adult sites generate huge bandwidth bills or consume 100+GB's per month. In fact many do no more than non adult sites. Furthermore many non adult sites do more traffic then adult sites. That's not to say that some adult sites don't burn mega traffic. Some do, we even host several that consistently burn more than 1TB (1000GB) of bandwidth per month. However we host many more that burn less than 100GB's per month. Bottom line here Golgo is that your site will burn as much traffic or as little traffic as your client puts into it. For $100/year your client can easily start off with a 500MB/20GB per month plan. Php, Mysql and PhpMyadmin are well within your reach on such a plan. Furthermore on a flexible host your client will be able to grow their site and upgrade their plan as needed up to and beyond a dedicated server.

Have some adult customers and most of them in the beginning sustain 10Mbits per sec (3,200 GB per month). The successful ones will get up to 75/95Mbits per sec before adding the second and third server. With Linux Red Hat ES it is possible to sustain 99Mbits per sec on a 100Mbit uplink which is amazing.

Sign up with a webhosting provider which will simply turn off services once you go over your allotted monthly traffic.
Otherwords... I'd bet money you'll be quite shocked your first month in when you get the bill with overcharges for an extra $30k on your $100/mo account.
Are you sure it's best to turn off services? If it's drawing traffic then it should be making money, although I don't know what the ratio is of looking to buying. But it should be arranged clearly in advance just how much your bill will increase if your traffic increases, so you won't be surprised by something that's in the fine print in the hyperlink to the hyperlink.
A good number of main-stream hosts will allow adult content. Just do a search on WHT and you'll easily find them. Most hosts who cater solely to adult webmasters don't generally hang out here. Your best bet to find them is to visit some of the adult webmaster forums like GFY, weboverdrive, webmasterlinkup etc.
