Best video format to encode to

What is the best program and video format for a web site that has fair quality and not excessive bandwith usage?

Do remember that you can encode video to MULTIPLE bitrates (quality)'s. If possible -> flash might be the best choice. Otherwise I'd go with something quicktime supports (because you can have it set so that it plays while loading)

    Streaming: Nullsoft NSV
    Normal: divX + AAC audio.

If it's going to be streaming from a website, I'd say wmv/asf because most people have windows media player installed on their computer and not quicktime.

I'd say wmv. You can just easily insert a wmv plugin into a page, without the need to install streaming software in the server.

The quality is good for the filesize and the Windows Movie Maker is pretty neat, where you can easily edit and make WMVs; unlike divx/mpg (you can't stream divx right? not sure about mpg), where you have to play around and have some experience first with the encode.

Please don't use quicktime. I refuse to have it on my machine.

And before anyone suggests it, please don't use Real. It's like a virus the way it takes over your computer.

I convert to videos to .wmv and find most users have no problems with this. Quuality and file size are acceptable. It works well for me so that's what I use.

i usually offer avi's (compressed with divx usually) and mov's so you can be sure everyone is happy. as much as i hate macs, i still don't leave them out of the loop. quicktime actually has some pretty killer quality.

Check it on my site. There are some german music channels which stream real media at a very fair quality even at fullscreen.

um avi works on all operating systems as well, MPG files are evil, they are not that good quality and take up a lot more space the avi.

Avi is definitely the best format.
