How can this place make money?

How can this place make enough to stay open? http://www.yousendit.com/ Files up to 1GB are accepted! It says at the bottom, "Transferring over 33,973,865,717,760 bytes per day." It has to cost a lot to run that site. I see no ads at all.

There are some weird rumors about that site.

Some say, the site is ran by the CIA.

First I used it, they had no limits on the number of downloads.

    Then, they had the limit.

Then, they have ads on pages where people click on the link.

But still, it is hard to comprehend how they make money.

    33,973,865,717,760 bytes = 31,640.6280899 GB x 30 days = 949,218,842,697 GB a month. That is a **** load of gigs per month.

    949,218,842,697 GB = 926,971,526.0712891 Terabyte = 905,245.630929 Petabyte

i think your a bit off on your math:

    31,640.6280899 GB x 30 days = 949,218.842697 GB, not

    31,640.6280899 GB x 30 days = 949,218,842,697 GB

Still, thats close to 927TB a month, eesh

    They do have ads ..
when you begin downloading, you see ads.
If that much traffic is being downloaded, imagine how many people see the ads..

They has ads, google ads on the download page.

-And when you upload something they put a limit of 100 downloads per that file. So people like to post the download links on forums not just email. When the 100 download on a individual file has been reached it just redirects to google ads.

Difference is the location of the decimal place in the answer. Maybe the decimal got forgotten originally? That would make for the extra 6 digits.

they probably have their own datacenter or space/racks in dc, hooked up to several bandwidth provider with dedicated fibre optic connections.

EDIT: Did an IP whois lookup, its cogent!

How reliable is their figure for how much they're transferring? Any evidence to back it up? What if they really aren't transferring 900TB+ per month.

    Actually they are pretty good.

I'm in a huge Basketball Community ( basketballboard.net) and they constantly use it to share nba highlights. When the link expired (after 30 clicks/1 week), they just post up another one.

I did the math, and it's actually only about 0.37 Mbps.

Do I need to multiply by 8 to get the actual number or is that it? because if it's by 8 it's still only 2.9Mbps. From cogent, that isn't too bad, on a dedicated server. You can probably get a relatively cheap one, and those ads can probably provide more than enough for it.
