i have to register a .com domain and buy an hosting plan. Should I buy these services from one company (Dreamhost) or should I buy the domain from a company (RegisterFly) and the hosting from another (Dreamhost)? What are pro and cons?
Note: with Dreamhost the domain is free with an hosting plan but the customer can choose to register the domain with another company and delegate dns.
Whatever you do, make sure that you retain total control of your domain name in case you have to move to another host for some reason. Also if you plan on going with a free domain through a hosting company, make sure you read the fine print.
I'd say buy your domain from directly any ICANN authorized sponsor like godaddy.com/directi.com/enom.com (etc) and host with anyone. This gives you much more freedom to change your host around if you want to without any problem.
And correct most people post here do run hosts however that does not mean everyone here are eager to get clients by simply posting in the forums. Just my few cents perhaps.
its always better to buy domain from a seperate company and hosting from seperate...
and when you buy a domain make sure you get total control over your domain... in this respect directi.com is quiet good.. they allow you to manage name servers as well as child name servers.. aprt from profiles etc..
And for web hosting do proper research before you buy.. its better you buy after researching.. then regreting after buying..
I agree you should really buy seperate, if you decide to leave your host getting your domain back off them may be a daunting task, check out the following registars. www.godaddy.com www.namecheap.com www.registerfly.com
There plenty of them, research on the forums!
It all depends upon how easy the domain access would be provided to you and how swiftly you ca transfer the domain. If this is provided quite effeciently then you can surely go for the domain registration as well as the domain hosting with the same company. For this you can refer the TOS of the company.
In case the TOS are silient about that then get it confimed in written first of all. And if the TOS does not allow the domain transfer to any other host or registrar in future then you should opt for different host and registrar.
