I had exactly same concerns and wrote them (istockphoto) direcly. Answer was:
Yes you can.
However you cannot resell them as image files.
New to the site, and I thought I would chime in on this topic.
I find stock photos a little obsolete in the age of digital cameras and so forth. If you take the picture yourself (self proclaimed photographer that is) then there is no copyright infringement that goes for taking a picture of a McDonalds sign and posting it to your web site. The copyright laws do not infringe on (art) as a freedom of expression.
Example: Andy wahrhol and his famous cambells tomato soup can picture. (He profited greatly for selling that!)
