How do you describe "Web Hosting" ?
Recently, I realized that I am failing to explain my business to the people who doesn't know anything about hosting, servers, network etc.
For them, internet is accessing to www.yahoo.co.jp or livedoor.com and read news, using search engines etc.
The best explanation I came up was:
When you surf the internet, you're visiting many web pages right? They have domain names like "somesite.com" and addresses like "www.somesite.com" or "http://somesite.com". To have domain name doesn't mean you can publish it to the world. You need a space, a room to put your contents and make it available for public access.
What I am doing is, to rent that room to the people.
Just think if you wrote a book, that doesn't mean you already published it. What you can do with your book is:
1. Keep it to yourself
2. Build a publishing company, purchase all the equipments, spend 100s of millions of dollars, and publish your book by yourself.
3. Go to a publishing company, and pay them for publishing your book.
I am like publishing company here. I am publishing web pages of many people in my servers.
* Are you selling computers?
* So you make people selling their products in your homepage, like yahoo
* So your company is like internet-cafe ?
I am doing this in Japanese language which is far better than my English
Any good descriptions of "Web Hosting" for real dummies?Last edited by BurakUeda; 04-20-2005 at 09:28 PM.

I at times dread the big family gatherings, with the constant, "so Robbie, (only grandmothers, uncles and aunties are allowed to call me that! ) what are you doing with yourself these days?"
I then launch into the whole web hosting is like a virtual real estate agent, and we have apartment buildings (servers) and we sublet those apartments out for a monthly fee, to our clients for their websites.
That's about the closest and easiest way to explain this business to those folks who don't understand the net. Next time I might make some large cards with pictures and stuff, showing the supply chain down and up!• WLVPN.com • NetProtect owned White Label VPN provider •

When talking to idiots, i'll say something along the lines of:
Web hosting is a type of service which allows people to put whatever legal content they want on the internet, on their own dot com address.

I explain it as such.
When you go to mtv.com or microsoft.com, it's on a server. Now either they own their own server or someone else owns it, but that server is "hosting" that site.
After all, it has to be some place for people to find it. Hosting is the home place for that site. That's what I do, give people's sites a home.Since April 2001 Atlantis Services - Proudly servicing everyone's web hosting needs!

I use "idiot" to describe a person who is a novice while we're talking about a subject. So they may be idiots while talking about the internet, but they might not be idiots while discussing a topic like.. nuclear biochemistry.
ya dig?

Usually I say we're kind of like an Internet Service Provider like they may have at home, but for websites instead of people.

Like Bob, I compare it to real-estate. If you think of a website as a virtual-person, everybody needs a home. I rent them their apartment.

Storage & Bandwidth
Think of a refrigerator - the amount of things you can put in that is the storage,
Bandwidth would be the electricity needed to run the refrigerator - typically - the larger the refrigerator, the more electricty it takes to run.
Both the refrigerator (storage) and electricity (bandwidth) need to work together for webhosting to be possible

The analogy to a virtual real estate does the trick. One of my partners is a real estate broker and she was able to explain it to a grandmother using this analogy: The domain name/url is like a street address and the server space is compared to a leased lot. The website design is the housing unit. Although in real estate, you actually purchase the lot.
It was easily understood.Protagonist WebHosting Services
