    Question Server Crashed Twice in Two Weeks

    My server would go unresponsive, it would respond to ping but all other services went dead. This was second time in 10 days.

    On first occassion the datacenter tech told me the error on colsole was;
    "eth0: can't fill rx buffer"

    The second when server crashed he said the error was;
    VFS: Quota for id xxx referenced but not present.
    VFS: Can't read quota structure for id xxxx.

    Please help as my server used to ve very stable until recently.

    What could have caused this?

    Can a quota error ever cause a server to go dead?
    I do not know the first error.

    What is your file system like? Your quota file might be corrupted and you might want to use quotacheck to rebuild the quota file(s).

    For your eth0... what is your driver for eth0? Maybe reading this might help you in some ways:

    what do u mean by "what is your file system like"?

    My datacenter tech updated the intel eternet card drivers, this should handle the etho error i guess.

    Also my kernel is the latest vmlinuz-2.4.9-e.59.

    Specifically the following quta error i am getting;
    Apr 15 17:13:36 www kernel: VFS: Quota for id 7270 referenced but not present.
    Apr 15 17:13:36 www kernel: VFS: Can't read quota structure for id 7270.
    Apr 15 18:55:30 www kernel: VFS: Quota for id 7268 referenced but not present.
    Apr 15 18:55:30 www kernel: VFS: Can't read quota structure for id 7268.

    Apr 12 07:37:53 www kernel: VFS: Quota for id 7268 referenced but not present.
    Apr 12 07:37:53 www kernel: VFS: Can't read quota structure for id 7268.
    Apr 12 09:37:15 www kernel: VFS: Quota for id 7270 referenced but not present.

    You can't handle and solve such problems this way. During the time we are talking about, your server is down. This a bad situation for your business. Just hire a specialist and let him find out the problem. A fair price for this problem solving should be $100.
