Choosing operating system
Need to choose between:
CentOS 3.3 3.4 or 4.0
Debian Sarge
Debian Stable
Fedora Core 1
Fedora Core 3
FreeBSD 4.X
FreeBSD 5.3
FreeBSD 5.X and the one with X86_64 BIT
NetBSD 1.6.X
NetBSD 2.0
OpenBSD 3.6
Redhat 9
Redhat Enterprise Server 3
I have php and mysql heavy usage and the machine is an Intel Pentium 4 3GHz (HT) with 1024MB RAM
Need the most stable, comfortable, cpanel/whm compatible system out there, also easy to manage and configure because we need to secure the system first.
My actual system is:
RedHat 9.0

RH Enterprise
Is supposedly the one guaranteed fully compatible and stable version.

The ones from that list most compatible with cPanel are CentOS 3 and Redhat Enterprise 3. As for which is the most secure, you should speak to your server admin about that as any of them can be totally secure or insecure depending on who is managing it. As for the easiest to manage, again you should speak to you admin and see which one they (or you) find easier.

We found CentOS w/Cpanel to be a very stable combo. Fedora is bleading edge with a few bugs here and there. As a stand alone machine, you can't go wrong with FreeBSD, which is very good choice also.

We have found several problems with some of the Fedora builds and hardware compaitibility. But sometimes you just have to grin and bare it to keep costs down.

centos is a great choice. fedora 3 isn't a bad choice either. Since you are asking... BSD/gentoo/slackware probably aren't for you.

Guess centos then ;)
am changin because one malicious user made some attack on our servers using php (i guess) cause we found the file phpshell.php then some ./dat directories with programas like eggdrop and such so we feel our system is compromised.
We are going to a new box, secure it as much as we can with php as safe mode, the mod_user_dir settings on apache, suexec on php, then put all the accounts there... and give our best hopes to that new one :$
